Correct - although BMW's M-Sport division did a custom job for McLaren, so it's certainly not an 'off-the-shelf' job like most of them
There's many examples - the Gillet Vertigo uses the Alfa Romeo V6 or the old Ford Cosworth 2 litre turbo, the De Tomaso uses a Ford V8.
Engines are often the most expensive part of the development process - particularly with emissions regulations and all. If you've got access to a half decent motor (and let's face it, something with a Merc V12 in the middle of it is off to a pretty good start grunt wise!) it saves a lot of development budget.
Yeah It cant be off the shelf its coated with gold (I just cant remember why it is)
