It takes place this Sunday 27th June and could be the last year it's run in its current form before the road is paved!

Looks like it's going to be a big battle between Monster Tajima with his Suzuki SX4 and Rhys Millen with his Red Bull Hyundai Genesis PM580. If the conditions are right this may be the year they beat the 10 minute mark.

Autoblog seem to be covering it well.

8(

Although, that could mean higher speeds and a bigger variety of cars.
Is there any TV broadcast for this in the US?

EDIT: What the? The Hyundai looks like a LMP.

The Hyundai is certaily unique, it doesn't look like it should be going up a mountain dirt road and makes the Escudo look normal! If they do pave the road the photos wouldn't be the same without the big red rooster tails behind the cars!

I don't think it's on TV but it should be live stread here > http://www.usacracing.com/ppihc/ppihc_live

A live stream, that's cool, let's hope they will actually show live video footage. 👍
Pikes Peak is so underrated, one of the best motorsport events every year.

I hope they stream some video too. I think the race starts at 9am in Colorado Springs so this should be your local race start time.

And the course map just for fun

The only TV I've ever seen of this is a 30-minute highlight show, usually sometime in August.

Anyone know if Polyphony has showed up? :P

Also, anywhere one can watch this on TV?

Someone was there and mic'ed Tajima's car to gather sound data for a video game. I'd like to say it was for GT5, but the guy is an American so I'm skeptical. The only other option I can imagine would be some guy gathering data for Dirt 3. It seems like PD has kinda forgotten about this guy since the earlier days of GT. I'd love to see Pikes Peak in GT5.

Monster Tajima wins, but 10-minute record is yet to be broken.
If someone does do a sub-10' run next year and it was on an all-paved road, will the person/people who do it have feeling of what might have been if it was the year before when it was still a dirt road?

Pikes Peak is a Toll Road open to the public, so it would only be a matter of time before it got paved all the way to the top. Plus, pressure from the Sierra Club over all the gravel and loose dirt getting washed off the road damaging the local ecosystem pretty much sealed it.

(Ah jeez, "Sealed it"...Didn't intend to make a bad pun there! :sly:)

I'm fuming. Think of how much resources PD spends for lame city circuits showing off monuments while there's such an awesome track as Pikes Peak...

It will never be the same. :(

I have always wanted to get invited to race up PP and don't know if i will ever make it, wouldn't it be cool if GT5 or some other video game would step up to the plate and preserve the race in cyber space for us enthusiest.

Seriously, watch this video. I just had to pick my chin up off the floor.

O.k., this is RWD … but still … looks like he could've gone quite a bit faster. And that's the class record?! Did they already pave a lot since last year?

I mean, remember "Climb Dance" with Ari Vatanen:

It's a 911 Cup car, not a wild open class car. Looked to me like he was going along pretty good. And yes, he did set a record for his class. He also finished 6th overall, which is damn good.

I didn't way what I did because of his speed. Just the rawness of the video + all the great sounds that car makes.

As seen from exactly where I sat: Devil's Playground. The best seat in the house, you can see so much of the road. That section's paved now, though, right up until just after Devil's Playground. Here are a few of the pics I took. A lot of the ones I shot of cars passing nearby turned out blurry, and otherwise I got a lot of video (including Monster's and Millen's runs, and one of a guy almost getting nailed by a Cobra), but I don't want to upload a bunch of few-second long videos, so I need to find a way to convert the video files (from a Kodak Easyshare digicam) to something Windows Movie Maker will read.

Almost immediately to the right of this pic is where it turns back into gravel. Lower down the mountain the unpaved roads were in crappy condition, potholes all over the place. Once he reached the top, Tajima was asked about what he thought of more paved sections bringing higher speeds, he said the dirt is a lot of fun . While that may be, personally I look forward to more tarmac. Especially as once I get my car going faster and handling better, I'll be up here more often outside of the races. Maybe they'll let me take a crack at competing in Time Trial some day... they let a 16 year old girl (with a karting history, albeit) take a Mini up!

After we left the actual part of the road that's raced on, the gate guard told us we were free to use both lanes, so me and a rear-drive AE86 raced down, weaving through everyone. Great fun until I blew a heater hose and had to drive a couple hours back to Fort Collins with the heater on and the revs up at stops to keep from overheating!

Do you ever NOT have problems with your car?

Great pics BTW. I really hate the fact that I have never gone to that. Wish I would have remembered it a bit sooner, because I would have went. I forgot about it until the week before, by then it was too late to plan anything. I'll really miss it now since I am moving to AZ for school. :(

I just topped 250,000 miles, everything's breaking all at once now! I think the torque converter has finally crapped out (didn't use the one that came with the 'Lude tranny for balance reasons), and I'm going after all the ball joints, alignment, and tires soon. Otherwise... yeah, there's a bunch of interior electical-features problems. But I still love my Honda!
