Pit and win at Interlagos (Exciting final laps)

I've only won five races in nearly 200 attempts. I couldn't help but be totally excited about this win that happened a couple of days ago.

Daily Race C at Interlagos with the Gr3 class. I managed to qualify second with a 1:33.5ish (just missed my first ever pole). By the end of lap one, I had taken the lead. For my strategy I decided to save a little bit of fuel so my pit stop would not be as long. I pitted on lap 6 and came out 6th. Every car in front of me was trying to go the distance. Two of them ended up ducking to pit road on lap 8 and 9, but the rest were able to make it. But not before I caught and passed them! :) I drove my butt off and passed four cars in like a lap and a half.

Congratulations

I qualified 3rd and finished 2nd without pitting, first place guy also didn't pit but the rest of the field did so the two of us had a huge lead over the pack.

I tried that, my race was plenty of top guys, I was leading by 3 seconds by lap5 and stopped in the pits... Nobody else pitted, went to last (18th), managed to gain only 5 or 6 positions. (I think orma snow was streaming, he tried to win starting without qualifying, and finished 4th, trl doodle was there too, same thing, but finished much worse)
So, really impressive win, congratulations

Thanks everyone!

It is definitely NOT a race winning strategy. I still would have been third if the first two didn't have to make emergency pit stops. I did another race after this and did not pit at all. I came home second.

I must admit, its kinda sucky how some cars are so much better on fuel. Found out last night the Gr4 Citroën can do last nights Interlagos race with the fuel map on 1 for the entire 10 laps, where as the Gr4 viper had to be put on a fuel map of 3 for several laps. I tried the Citroën after seeing someone rake the field with it, I had a few laps left when the race was over. Like it didn't just barely make it, I could have gone much longer all the while still running top 5 pace

similar type thing for me last night on Gr.3 @ the Berg ... Aston, dialled down fuel in the first 2 laps, running in 7th, everyone was pitting, except I gained time in the pits with less time fuelling, came out in 2nd and held til the end. certainly playing different strategies can give you some gains (and losses) if you are brave enough

For some reason when I try and save fuel I lose concentration and make a lot of mistakes.. I just keep fuel usage to 1 and go all out all the time. Even with the pitstop I end up performing better anyways..

How do you save fuel? Are you changing the fuel map, or altering your driving style or both?

For me, I change the fuel map and that's it. I don't bother with short shifting or lifting early because it'll knock me out of my rhythm. Tires get down there in wear because I'm still going hard, but it's never been too much of an issue.

I'm just a rhythm oriented driver. It always takes me several laps of qualifying before I run my typical 1:33.5ish lap time at interlagos. Once I do I'm usually set for the rest of the day, unless I take a long break. Then I need to mentally reset. Happens at most tracks for me tbh.

So that's why I don't try anything fancy, just change the fuel map and go.
