Playing GT2 the right way

Hi all:

Well, to start out, I borrowed a friend's copy of GT2 a year ago or so, and played it. Unfortunatly, I don't think I went about it the "right" way. Basically, I bought a prelude, made enough money to get a lancer, and just destroyed everything. It got sort of boring. So, finally, its time to really PLAY the game. So, any tips, etc, to get started? I have 2 options:

1) Play it on the computer (emulation)
2) Play it on the dreamcast(bleemcast: WOAH, nice graphics!)

So, any tips here? Which car should I start out with? Which direction should I go? Should I tune? Quite honestly, I want to become a god in this game. ;) Thanks everyone, and I hope I can become a part of the community here.

First, find 75$ in your couch cushions and get a PSone and a copy of the game.
Secondly, Go thru and pass all the license tests and get all golds on at least the B license. You will win a Spoon S2000. Put a sport tranny and a mod chip in and go racing. If you want to make some money quick. Go to the Trial mountain endurance race. In about 40 minutes you will have 150,000 Cr and the Denso Sard Supra. Keep it for the "IA" races or sell it for the money. Then go thru and win some cars. If you want to "keep it real"
just mod suspension, transmission, and MAYBE stage 1 stuff.
There are a few cars that, even underpowered, will annihilate the competition. But when you get to the 295 HP Historic car race and the game pulls out a GT-40...

Get a used car first. Any decent car will do.

Then pass all the licence test.

Race in the FF & FR races and you'll get a sileighty and T111.

Use them and race throught the other races.

Race endurance for some good cars.

And Lancers. Get one and you'll breeze through the game.

Unless you have a steering wheel, no other controller can match the DS or DS2 for feel.
IMHO, you would find it easier to drive with a controller like the DS.

*though as an aside, I saw some computer controllers that looked a lot like the Dual-Shock.*

No matter what, Good Luck and have a great drive.

I love the game on Bleemcast. The DC controller is the best controller I've used for racing ever. The triggers are perfect for accel/brake.

However, on bleemcast, the game doesn't recognize the triggers as analog. I'm still working on this one. Alternately, there are many adapters which will let you use the Dual Shock on the DC, so you have the PSX controller with the improved framerate of the Bleemcast game. I literally can't play GT2 on the PSX anymore because of the framerate.

First off, what I would suggest is use the right cars in the events. For example, in the station wagon races use a station wagon, in the 80's car events use an 80's car, etc etc.

Seocndly, run all of the manufacturer races. However, there's one stipulation: don't use any modifications. Keep your car stock. The AI cars in these events are stock, and even in the [R] events they're stock with the exception of the racing mod. This will make it much more of a challenge for you. If that's too hard, try sport tires only nd you should have no problem.

Good luck!

So which car should I start out with? I'm thinking an rx-7 of some sorts. . . oh, and I'm finally going to use a MT, since that's what I use in real life. . .

Start with whatever you want! For a challenge, try to get a few liscense test cars if you want. I personally like starting with the 4WD Maza Protege (I think it's a GTX) but there are tons of cars to choose from. A Miata would be fun too, or one of the Silvias. Don't know if there's a used FTO that's affordable, but that's a good choice too. There are really tons of good cars to start with, and it's really really hard to get something you can't use. You might even waht to try a Kei car...

Andy, if your gonna drive manual you should go to options and change your up shift and down shift to L1 & L2. To make some quick money and after you get the liscence's go to the speedway that's 50 grand I think, and try Red-Rock, there you'll win a TVR Speed 12 you can sell for 250 Gs. After you get the tracks down pretty good go to options and activate damage and tire wear this will help your precision and keep the challenge factor interesting. Hope to see you in a challenge in the near future.Good luck.

agh, good lord, I'm stuck on the 4th license test. Yes, the small skidpad (B license). Should I be driving ON the red/white strip? My best time is 24.141. :(

I always thought the damage and tire wear options only applied to two player races.

For the B licenses, just follow the dashes in the road and you should be okay. They will change color when you are supposed to lay off the gas or brake. Try to be smooth, don't jerk the car around and slide everywhere - sliding is slow.

Is this Bleemcast GT2 thing still available anywhere?
I would really love to try it out on the DC with improved graphics.

ANother way to keep it real is to never mod the cars, except a manual full-race tranny. There's a few cars that have Auto-Selcts of "1" which can make several races a nightmare if you have no gearbox control.

Use Italian cars for the Italian Nat'ls, Kei cars for Kei races, Historics for Historics. The best way to try out as many cars as possible is to sell every prize car you get, and avoid every car you've used before you can for your 2nd game. With 600 cars, you could play the game 5-6 times and never use the same car twice!

Use about 250hp for any race up to ~591hp, ~200 for 493hp, 160-180 for 394hp, et al. if you want to tune cars. Try to make things challenging; tune your own GT300 or GT500 car, rather than buying/winning your own off-the-lot race special.

Try not to push other cars, or avoid walls and curbs. There's tons of ways to make challenges for your self. My favorite is maake a spending cap for each car; make it earn its own keep concerning tuning!

Drive as tightly around the circle as possible. Don't touch the grass, of course, but the rumble strip/curbs are okay to touch.

Must be very tricky to do on a computer keyboard.

I would try electronics boutique or gamestop. The framerate improvement is the best.

I'm on the test with the vitz(iirc). I have to drive around in a circle, under 23.7 seconds.

That one is very tough without analog gas control. Stay as close to the center as you can, and don't let your tires squeal or slide, but make sure you're going fast enough to be at that limit. You want to steer with the gas, not the steering wheel. As you appraoch teh end, you can floor it and let the car gravitate toward the outside as you cross the line. Good luck on that one, it's tough.

Damn I don't think it was ever released over here in the UK. I wonder if I can pick up an imported copy, because I still have my DC boot disc that lets you play imported and pirate games.

Full race tranny, and you're set! What color did you win?

Take on the FR races, or slap the S2000 Challengers silly. I think it's quite fair to race it in the Convertible Cup races, the Pure Sports Cars, and the Grand Touring Cup.

Note that the NA Stage 1 tuning is absurdly expensive!

dark blue. :)

But what should I upgrade? I want to win the Trial Mountain Endurance race. Sports tires? Suspension? Transmission(flywheel, clutch, full race tranny?)

note: I only have that original 10K.

If you can afford the race transmission, try it. Tires will be a huge help, though, I would go with those first. A lighter flywheel will help accelleration quite a bit.

However, you should be able to do just fine with minimal mods. Try to do the least amount of mods you can - hell, try to run stock and see what you can do.

I don't take chances after my first GT1 game, too many manufactuer's events seemed to force me at the Test Course or High Speed Ring with a Auto Setting of 1. Full-race trannys are always my first upgrade, if affordable. (First-day cars are usually the exception, they all seem to have decent ratios...)

Can you say hell?
