OVER

It's obvious the Jets are going to win the whole thing.

Ha ha! It's high time an NFC East team won the lot, and since the Giants threw it all away at the weekend, that leaves Philly! Seriously, I think the Eagles could go all the way.

Giles, I must ask: Being British, how do you know this much about American football? I guarantee you there's not another non-US/Canadian member on this site who knows what the NFC East is.

PS: Atlanta is going to win it all. :P

It was really popular in the UK in the late eighties/early 90s, but the popularity has dwindled somewhat since then, possibly due to the general rehabilitation of our own version of 'football'. I followed it up until about 1993, i.e. just before the expansion and the Raiders moving back to Oakland. I've always been a Giants fan, and watched their 1990 last-kick win over Buffalo live, which was something like 4am UK time. It was wierd, it seemed feted that I was to watch it, because the Superbowl of that year was being held in the Pasadena Rose Bowl, which is where Depeche Mode played their 101 concert, and I'm a big DM fan, and the whole thing came together. Mum and Dad were Bills fans, and they were IN the States, so I was on my own in the house with the dogs.

The dogs were NOT PLEASED when I was screaming and jumping around at the end of the game!!

Only this year I decided to take a bit more of an active interest in it, especially when I watched the Eagles hammer the Redskins in September when I was in Boston. I've found NFL.com to be one of the best web sites on Earth, and it makes it easy for me to follow the Giants and keep an eye on the rest of the leagues. This weekend I had the Gamecenter on my laptop (wireless) while I was doing some runs for a GT3 OLR competition. The laptop suddenly went "TOUCHDOWN" and I crashed!!

So, bit of a long one, but there you have it! :)

Indeed! What an explanation. I'm surprised any sort of American sport can catch on in Britain, especially football. If any North American sport were to catch on elsewhere in the world, I would assume it'd be hockey, since it's fairly similar to soccer/football.

There's quite an active scene in ice hockey in the UK with people playing, but it's not really televised.

Like I say, the popularity of US football has waned recently. You hear the same old trite expressions trotted out: "It takes too long", "They keep stopping" and the like.

Unfortunately, I have to agree, however anyone saying that would shut up if they saw the last five minutes of a close basketball game; it usually takes no less than twenty minutes to complete.

Well, I have to say that I'm surprised by the results. Maybe it's because I've been out of the frame for a while, but I was pretty much equivocal over who would win Jets/Raiders. I thought that Oakland probably had the power, but the Jets are on a real roll, so that one could have gone either way. I was really surprised at the Bucs destroying the 49ers. Have the Bucs been good for a while now, or was that a freak result?

Still Eagles all the way though!

The Bucs defense has always been good, and this year they got even better. They should be good for a couple more years at least, that is unless they get killed by the Salary Cap like the 99(?) Ravens did.
