Playseat Challenge Shifter Mount

Ok so after seeing @VeeDoubleU post about clutch pedal making you faster, I need this bit of kit.

Question is, the shifter mount I see on playseat is priced in $ and tbh a little expensive for what it is, it's almost the price of the shifter itself lol.

Anybody had/found any alternatives? Any DIYers out there?

Also, if I am restricted to the playseat shifter mount, is it compatible with all shifters or is there a particular G29 compatible one I need to get?

Unfortunately that’s pretty much true of any small bit of equipment for any specialist hobby. I remember paying $40 for a camera flash diffuser, which when it came down to it was nothing more than bit of white semi opaque moulded plastic.

Anyway I’m glad you got your bit of bent metal for a more palatable price ;)

I've never claimed to be the sharpest tool in the shed, but I don't see how that attaches to the challenge chair...
Do you simply bolt the horizontal support/cantilever bar to the steering wheel platform?
 
Word of warning to anyone purchasing, I bought official Playseat mount, and found after installing that the shifter can only be mounted on the right hand side of the wheel (unless someone can share info on how it can be mounted otherwise).

It required some retraining to get used to it, being from the UK and having gears on the left. I don't particularly like H shifter but had decent success with sequential on my G25 for a long time.

Also worth considering is that I've found in VR this can seriously effect the immersion when you reach in to the door to change gears!

I used a modified Sat Nav RAM mount.

I don't know where the thread has gone where someone asked this before but I put my shifter in my playseat challenge with a right angle bracket and a u-bolt clamp, with some rubber sheet.View media item 37556 Cost about £7.

This will not work for the PlaySeat Challenge ! Only the regular PlaySeat.

I have mounted a simple drum rack clamp. Or a pipe clamp. A drum kit uses the same tube inches as the Playseat Challenge. Just take the screw out and ready to go !

TRL_Lightning uses it to set world records in N cars. It is not faster in GR.4 or above.

I don't know, but I'm sure you could use clutch and flappy paddles?

I've found I'm consistent faster using auto anyway as I focus much more on braking points and driving line.

The playseat shifter is just plain weak. It doesn't hold up well and it's kinda awkward. If I'm not mistaken theres a modified version of it.

I got it from Halfords (get the smallest one - they call it exhaust clamp HEX300 35mm). £1.59

Then the right angle bracket was from wickes but any diy store will have something suitable. I can't remember the exact one I got but it might have been the reinforced angle bracket 80x50x70 code 152816. £2.19

Alternatively I found another cheaper one that should work 65x90x90 code 214968. £0.42

I got the rubber sheet (To wrap around the frame to protect it) from work and also changed to nuts to nyloc.
Then all you need is to drill a couple holes in the bracket .

The only downside of my mount is that once it's fixed to the frame there is no adjustability so that if you decide to change the angle of your playseat challenge then the angle of the shifter changes too.
 
My PlaySeat shifter mounter is ready. Even enough room for a handbrake !

I am so proud because it looks so professional ! Because of the “double” layer the whole steering wheel is secured or bolted better. Also check how the shifter is connected below. He made some sort of a round thing.

I used this a long while ago. A good alternative to the not so good "official" solution:

I eventually DIY a mount to mount both TH8a and TSS handbrake. A very messy solution, but it works. Will post a pic later.

The shipping will add cost, but It is an ok solution if you aren't a DIY kinda guy. Shipping was prompt and never had a problem with him.


For the upgrade I was contemplating a RAM mount solution, but that would have made it a lot more expensive then my current solution. It wobbles a bit horizontal, but solid vertically (what is most important).

The ebay seller i linked sells a complete package. Seems to me you aren't really a DIY kinda person so I suggest buying one of his. You wont regret it. Just make sure you buy the correct version! (in your case Logitech Shifter) IT is much better then the "official" one. Because the position is more natural.

If you do want to try a DIY, there are loads of solutions you can google out there. I don't recommend trying mine, because its very crude and ugly. Also specifically built so I could use the TSS and TH8A. You can try to copy the E-bay one though if you are handy with wood.
 
I tried different positions and liked this one most. I have the steering wheel closer than normal. Also in a real car the shifter is closer in depth but further down. So the effect is the same I think. I can switch faster from the shifter to the wheel because the wheel is closer.

How about a noob question. how do these shifters work when the car has a 7or 8 speed gearbox?
because i only see 6 and a reverse.
