Final Fantasy X
Genre
RPG. Made by Squaresoft.
The Story
This excellent story begins as Tidus, one of the main characters, is playing the world-wide sport of Blitzball. A large monster, which you will find out to be Sin (thats his name), starts tearing the area apart while Tidus is in it. Auron, another important character, saves Tidus from Sin and takes him to a completely different part of the world.
Tidus meets a summoner named Yuna. Her job is to make a pilgrimage to all of the temples in Spira (the name of their world) and get the Final Summoning to destroy Sin. From there, the party of seven members (Tidus, Yuna, Wakka, Lulu, Kimahri, Auron, and Rikku) forms. You are now on a quest to guard Yuna in her pilgrimage and help her destroy Sin once and for all. As the story progresses, you will find out more about the characters and their pasts. The story progresses through cut scenes and movie scenes. Squaresoft outdid themselves this time. The characters were so realistic, that you couldnt help but feel the same way they do. When I stopped playing, all I could think about is what would happen next in their quest to save the world. The ending is well worth it. This is art.
Gameplay
This is one of the few games in my vast library (I think I have 9 games total) where I actually have to think. The game consists of running around as Tidus (where Tidus represents the whole party) and solving puzzles and going from place to place. The fighting, like in every Final Fantasy, is turn based, which means that the characters and enemies each get their own turn in a fight. For example, Tidus would attack, then Yuna, then the enemy and then Tidus again. This order can of course be changed by slowing down or delaying the enemy or hasting your allies. What is special to this Final Fantasy is that there is a little window which shows the order of attacks, so you can carefully plan out who should attack and with what. Everything is put in just the right place to make the fighting as easy as possible.
The characters each have their own area of expertise and can equip different armor and weapons, which makes you have to use them together for your advantage on the battlefield (Tidus: Speed, Yuna: Healing magic and summons, Wakka: Good for aerial enemies, Lulu: Uses strong black magic, Kimahri: Can learn enemy skills and uses healing magic, Auron: most powerful of all, Rikku: can steal special items and defeat mechanical enemies with ease).
This Final Fantasy is different from the others mainly because they threw out the whole concept of using levels to make a character stronger. In this Final Fantasy, there is a Sphere Grid system; as a character fights, he/she gets ability points (AP). When a characters AP reaches certain limits, his/her sphere level will increase. The character can then move a certain number of spaces on the Sphere Grid equal to his/her current sphere level. You must then activate nodes on the Sphere Grid using their corresponding spheres to raise attributes, or learn new abilities. This allows freedom in the way a character matures and develops. I could make Auron the weakest character in the game, but be the strongest magic wise. This only adds to the appeal of the game because you can now customize characters to you liking. For example, Tidus from game one is different from Tidus from game two.
This game is also full of mini-games. The most important, of course, is blitzball (very, very cool sport). Others include monster catching, Chocobo (kind of like an Ostrich sized cockatiel) training, finding the hidden Aeons (summons), and getting everyones legendary weapons.
Itll take you a good 100 hours to beat it the first time if you complete everything.
I could go on, but Ill stop here.
Graphics
When I said Squaresoft outdid themselves, I meant it. The normal walking-around graphics are clear and the characters and enemies are smooth and detailed. When the movie scenes come around you better be ready. The hair and clothes move with the wind, and the characters emotions are clear just by looking at their faces. Well done.
Replay Value
Even though this is an RPG, the Replay Value is still high. The way you interact with the characters changes some of the encounters of the game as well as how your character changes and matures through the course of the story. There is almost always some corner of Spira that you forgot to explore which holds new challenges for you to complete.
Audio
The voice acting in this game is really good. The characters words and tone express their emotions perfectly. The game has about 100 different music tracks for all of the different situations that you encounter through the course of the game. They definitely didnt slack off in the Audio department this time.
Summary
If youve noticed in my other reviews, there is always a bad section. This one didnt contain any. It is perfect for its genre and it is a must buy. This game isnt a good rental because, it takes well over 80 hours to beat it the first time. This is probably my favorite game out of all of the Playstation 2 games that I have played.
