That sucks! Better get your apology written. I am assuming its a LCD and not glass?

Why did you do it anyway? Bit dumb isn't it?

Just be honest to your dad. And expect a ban from the computer.

This has to be a joke. You used sandpaper on a monitor?

I hope you learnt something new: don't trust YouTube, and especially don't trust the comments people make.

Jeez you should have asked here first before taking advice on YouTube :ouch:

I cannot believe you used sandpaper on a monitor and there's no real way of going back from that however I have a few recommendations you could try.

Is it a glossy or matt monitor? Also is it glass fronted or just a panel? You weren't really clear because if its standard LCD they usually pretty scratch resistant unless you hit it with something sharp.

You could use a tiny amount of tinned car wax on a soft cloth and work it in circles lightly. Another thing you could try is polishing compound which is similar to toothpaste but formulated for scratches on glass and acrylic.

All of these will just mask the scratches, nothing will remove them apart from harsh strippers or chemicals which will destroy the monitor. The best course of action is to just admit to your dad what happened and offer to pay for it or something.

You used sandpaper.

Sandpaper.

Sandpaper.

...

I think I'm going to cry.

Seriously, I don't think there is anything you can do to solve this - other than replacing it. Good luck!

*Smack!*

Rule #1: Take almost everything on the web like a small grain of salt. Don't believe everything that is said.

Rule #2: Always check the store warranty and manufacturer warranty. Most of the time they won't cover something you did to it. Good luck.

Rule #3: Call a IT repair professional for advice.

Rule #4: Man up to it. You did it and you owe it to your parents. Say goodbye to your allowance for a while.

Just curious as to what sandpaper grit grade you used, if its 2 or 3 digits I might burst into tears....

If I did something as dumb as this, my parents would sell one of my games consoles.

And you know what?

I'd probably deserve it.

I find the following video relevant and highly allegorical.

Agreed.

The sandpaper bit is, somewhat, how repair can be done on certain types of screens. But, and this is a big but, the grades used are super fine and eventually work up to more or less polishing the surface, similar to how scratched discs can be repaired.

But with an LCD having a film plastic coating as final treatment, pretty much not an option.

Oh my.

By the way, keep magnets away from the old CRT screen you'll be using for a while.

How exactly did you scratch it the first time?

Bahaha, of all the things you could have tried why in the hell would you use sandpaper!?

My thoughts exactly.

You could try using sandpaper over the whole screen making it all look the same and then hope they don't notice. :sly:

The other option if you don't want your dad finding out is to rush to the store right now and buy a new monitor that's the same model and hide/throwout the old one.

Believe it or not guys, 8,000-12,000 grit sandpaper/polishing pads (and some kind of lubricant) can actually be used to take minor scratches out of glass, as Azuremen said. But using sandpaper that's meant for woodwork, I mean, are you serious?

I actually have superfine polishing pads that are called MicroMesh. The set that I have starts at 3,200 and gradually works up to 12,000. The 12,000 is insanely fine, though, and it would be used as the polishing part of repairing CDs/glass screens.

Sandpaper, used on wood, fiberglass and plastic.

Used to smooth down a "rough" surface to be treated by paint, stains, or laquor.

You might, and that's heavy on the "might", be able to find a replacement panel at a reasonable cost.

It is true what they are saying about fine grits, but the level of polish that you need will most certainly not come from manual rubbing, but rather machine buffing with the right pads and a very light polishing compound. Then of course heat will become a major contributor to damaging the actual LCD's so a very slow and pain staking process has to be observed.

Which means that it's not really worth the trouble(I know, it's not worth a painful process!) and you'll have to start coughing up the cash for a new one.

I think the only think you can do is to sand away the rest of the sceen. Eventually you'll have no glass and no scratches! Not to mention that the picture will be much clearer without a piece of glass in the way.

That is if there is a glass panel in front of the screen.
