Hey everyone! I have a 27" HD LCD and use an HDMI cable. If I use Auto settings in XMB display settings, the highest output is 1080i.

So, Im stuck between choosing which resolution setting I should set it on. Im thinking 720p looks better, but maybe 1080i is crisper, but almost too crisp. GT5P is seriously like the only game I notice a huge difference on when playing, soo much that I cant figure out which is best. I have digital copy of GT5P so I dont have a case to look at to see what output it says.

I was thinking GT5P went all the way to 1080p no? But my TV wont, so which one would you guys choose if you were in my situation?

1080i will be sharper put not as smooth.
720p will be less sharp however smoother.
It is all about your choice about what you prefer.

If your TV supports 1080p you can force GT into this mode by setting it as the only resolution in the PS3 settings. However if it cant I would suggest 720p, my TV supports 720p and 1080i only and I use to use 1080i but it use to cut a small amount off the side of the screen, but that could be just my TV.

I know but its driving me crazy every since I switched to 1080i! At 720p I think the overall appearence is better, but things like cockpits look way better to me in 1080i. But at the same time at 1080i the exteriors look almost horrible, like they have gobs of paint on them or something, I dont know, maybe its because my TV sucks to begin with...Its the same brand as my headlight bulbs on my damn car.....

Sylvania(but it was free)

I think you may be talking about the polygons and how the lines on cars (Details) may not look smooth, cause their so thin that it will just appear like it is never a static image. Ive had this problem, and I find that I dont really see a difference in 1080i or 720p to help the problem. But I do find 720p overall more smoother, So I would suggest 720p.
I have played prologue on 1080p, and it looks great, But It still doesn't look perfect with the lines on the cars (not Refined).

Hope it helps!

Also, Ive played forza 3, (Note. no fanboy) and although its no where near the level of detail that prologue has on its cars,
(The fact that it was released in 09, and prologue somewhere in 08) the lines and details that the cars, Do have, seem more refined and more smooth.

720p, without question. The progressive scan makes a dramatic difference when the action is going. It affects the smoothing of the pavement as you travel, the visibility of the horizon, etc. As far as differences between 720 and 1080 in terms of general resolution, I do not see the difference. I've done comparisons on my Sony Bravia 52" LCD and just cannot see any difference that is significant. But if I downgrade from a progressive signal to an interlaced signal its dramatically different. Also, keep in mind that at your size display the difference between 720 and 1080 resolution will be even less significant. I wouldn't even enable 1080i in your PS3. I have a screen about the same size as your's in my bedroom and I think EVERYTHING looks better in 720p, as opposed to 1080i, such as DVDs, Blu-Rays, games, whatever. Don't waste your time chasing insignificant differences in resolution when the progressive scan is what's really making the difference in the appearance of your images. Maybe, just maybe you'll see a small difference with a lot of still images with fine detail between 720p and 1080i, but you'll be squinting hard enough to give yourself a tension headache! LOL :)

I have done comparisons also. I found that 1080i gives far better detail overall. Its easy to see the difference on things like the dash dials. The numbers on the speedo are far clearer in 1080i. The thing that made me switch back to 720p was the scenery going by the side of the track. It is much clearer in 720p. On the London track the barriers would get a strange effect caused by the partial update 1080i uses, it would look like there are lines running across the barriers.

In short, static images in 1080i will always be sharper. Moving images will always be clearer in 720p.
