The Porsche 911 GT2 race car comes from a long line of 911 Turbo race cars. In 1993 Porsche took a 964 Turbo and extensively modifed it, and turning it into the Turbo S LM-GT. After seeing the cars potential on the track, with it being both fast and reliable, Porsche chose to develop a turbocharged 993 GT2 race car for customer use.

The 993 GT2 featured a stripped interior, integrated rollcage, bodywork adjustments (for stability and downforce) and wider fenders to handle racing slicks. The suspension was modified and the engine was tuned for endurance. Twin KKK turbochargers were installed so that the car produced 450HP with the required air restrictors.

At the same time Porsche also developed the 993 GT2 EVO, for racing in the GT1 category. The EVO saw an increase in power up to 600HP thanks to larger turbo's and also featured a larger wing, bigger fenders to accomodate wider tyres and a decrease in weight down to 1,100 KG. The GT2 EVO was short lived however, as Porsche replaced it with the 911 GT1 in 1996.

The GT2 and GT2 EVO were both campaigned in the BPR Global GT Series in 1994 and earned 7 class wins (out of 11 rounds) during their first full BPR season and they also earned a class victory at Le Mans in 1996 AND 1997. In the new FIA GT Championship in 1997, although they faced tough competition from the factory backed Viper's, 911 GT2's managed to win 3 races. By 1998 however, the GT2's were unable to combat the increased number of Viper's in the series and only won 1 race.

By 1999, the GT2's had been completely overpowered by the Viper's, as well as newcomers Lister. Despite this, a Roock Racing GT2 managed to win the GT2 class at the 24 Hours of Daytona. A displacement increase to 3.8 litres in 2000 didn't help Porsche, and they abandoned the GT2 program and focused on the new NGT category with the GT3-R. GT2's continued to be used by privateers until 2004.

With the launch of the 996 generation GT2, several privateers attempted to continue on the motorsports history by building their own racing versions. Belgian PSI Motorsports' 911 Bi-Turbo and German A-Level Engineering's 911 GT2-R were used with mixed success in national series such as Belcar, but were not competitive in international series.
