The 911 is Porsche's most iconic and longest running production car, with it being first produced back in 1963. The 996 was the fourth generation 911, introduced in 1997. The 996 was the first 911 to feature a water cooled engine, with prior cars being air cooled, and also featured the first new original platform for a 911. The 996 shared a lot in common with the new Boxster and Cayman, including the entire front end and suspension, interior and engine. The Carrera was the base 911, producing 300HP in 2001. Customers of the Carrera often complained that the car's front fascia was too similar to the cheaper Boxster and demanded Porsche change it, which is why, in 2002, Porsche unveiled the facelifted 911 (996.2) with the same headlights as the Turbo and a new front fascia, engine capacity was also increased to 3.6 litres.
In response to criticism that the Carrera has become too refined, Porsche unveiled the Carrera 4S in 2002, which featured lower suspension, the AWD system from the Turbo and a sports exhaust. It proved popular and set the pattern for future Carrera S models.
