This weeks Autocar has a small piece in it stating that Porsche has announced it would buy 20% of VW, taking at least 2 seats on the board.

The main reason cited for this is to protect VW from a hostile takeover bid from outside Germany.

If non germans got hold of VW it would screw up all VAG

What about the 'Spanish', 'Italian', 'Czech', 'British' & 'French' sides of VAG we have already?

Actually, I think VAG owns those concerns. Porsche's numbers are really on the up with the Cayenne if they're able to afford that much of VW.

To be fair Porsche already had 5% of VW, but you are quite right Nicky, It does represent a major investment for Porsche, but they are a very profitable company at the present time.

Porsche are the most profitable car company in the world. Note ven toyota beats them.
FY04 Porsche profits: 1.8 billion EUR or about 2.2 billion USD

Plenty beat that, like Nissan with 7.29 bn USD profits.

It depends how you look on the figures. The article I read probably forgot to mention that for the amount of cars it makes its the most profitable manufacturer in the worldor something like that.

Yeah, that would make more sense--sounds about right.

Esp. when you consider you can put more options on a car then the car's MSRP, it's clear how Porsche is making their money...

Yeah, but look at the sales figures from last year.
FY2003/04: 76,827 cars and trucks (Cayenne: 39,913; 911: 23,704; Boxster: 12,988; Carrera GT: 222)-Porsche
2004 production: 3,194,119 units-Nissan
You also have to realize that Nissan makes so much mostly because of Le Cost Killer Ghosn and having half of their cars being repackaged Renaults.

^True about Ghosn... not true about repackaging... yet. So far, it's only the Sentra/Sunny replacement that's a rebadge, and that isn't out yet.

What is increasing is the amount of parts sharing. That can only work to the benefit of Renault.

Porsche is making a helluva lot of money for a small boutique. I guess volume just isn't everything.

Porsche has claimed that they are the most profitable car company for a number of years now, I guess it is how you look at the figure.

I'd love to see more exciting VWs. Nothing has really amazed me since the mk2 Golf or Corrado.

Porsche is suppose to have one of the highest profit margins in the car business. Sure, Toyota or something may make more money, but they don't make as much per vehicle.

At least that's what I read says and Porsche claims.
