possible to play GT mode without mem card?

hey, i have a REALLY bad problem
i was wondering if i could somehow trick the thing
to let me play GT mode without a working memory card
(i have two non working ones because ARmax killed them, waa)
so now i cant play GT mode, so, yea
anyway to make this work?

Tried using ARMax to reformat the memory card? It's hard to believe that you physically trashed two memory cards -- if they're only corrupted, a reformat should restore them to a brand new empty state.

You can't. There is a technical reason for this, involving Graphs! Charts! Technobabble! CAD's! The Works! But basically? The PS2 doesn't have enough RAM to play the game, and it needs the memory card as a sort of RAM add-on.

If the ps2 doesnt have enough ram, then how come you can still play in arcade mode without a memory card??

ok, so the reformat thing jbrennen brought up, how does that work,
and i can go more in-dep here, so i will
when i put either my ARmax in, (and swich to mem. manager) or put my mem. manager disc in,
it show the card red, and it wont let me view it
i got to the standard ps2 browser, and it say whats on it, and says 3000KB remaining, so, atleast it knows theres a mem. card
but, yea, anyway to make it start working?

The programmers clearly made a conscious decision to require a memory card in order to play GT mode. Could they have done GT4 without this requirement? Certainly. Is it possible that they were able to increase your garage capacity by requiring the memory card... Yeah, maybe. It's certainly possible that they never load the entire save file into RAM at once, and that by doing so, they can offer a greater garage capacity than they could if the memory card was only optional.

Saying that the PS2 doesn't have enough memory to play the game is not accurate, but saying that it doesn't have enough memory to play the game while preserving the contents of your 1000-car garage... that's plausible.

Personally, I think that PD has been helping Sony sell more memory cards -- I'm not saying there's actual agreed-upon collusion, but PD has always, throughout the entire GT series, only allowed 1 game save per memory card. There is no justifiable reason for this from a technical standpoint. There are only three reasons I can see PD doing this:

1. They believe that one game save per memory card is something that makes sense and that the public is happy with this. I don't believe this.

2. They don't have the resources to program the game to support multiple game saves per memory card. I don't believe this.

3. Sony has given them some incentive to keep the 1-save-game-per-memory-card rule, like help with marketing, development expenses, equipment, etc. This is the only one that is believable to me.

ok, hardly understad any of that,
but deep man, deep, haha
yea, ill just go buy a new memory card,
ive been bying nykos (cheepest i can find)
do you think that those work well or should i buy a different memory card?

AR MAX Drive corrupts a mem-card if you try to move a file or delete it directly.

I'm back to a 52.2% back-up game save because I moved some files with the MAX Drive. The mem-card showed there was some mem-space taken up, but nothing showed the files, to be able to recover them. Poof! Gone.

Only use the PS2 browser to move or delete files.

how do you format a memory card?

A little Googling indicates that you select the memory card and press the Square button. Can't tell you much more than that until I get home where the manual is -- I've never had to reformat a card using ARMax.

yea,, its either circle or square, did some googling already right b4 you posted, thx alot you guys, if it fixes my memory cards, i can save 60 dollars worth of products, haha

I'll take your advice that you gave me via AIM. Anyway, GameSharks work better, as far as I know. If you use a cheater, GameSkark is the way to go. 10 Trillion dollars, 1 dollar cars, all golds in GT3 = 1 4M 4 1337 h4X0r, just kidding but anyway, your memory card seems screwed.
