Possibly High Beams/Low Beams in GT5?

As this article http://jalopnik.com/cars/feature/from-bucket-to-binary-morrison-corvette-scanned-into-gran-turismo-238136.php states, the PD crew seems to capture video of the car's high beams & low beams when putting together the imagery to reproduce the Art Morrison Corvette in GT5... amongst lots of other weird stuff... what do they use all that for?!

I wonder if that could mean that we will be able to flash high beams at our opponents via their mirrors when racing online?

What do y'all think?

P.S.: Of course honking the horn when passing a contrahent who just flew off the track at Pflanzgarten II would be even more satisfying... :D

I just read that article too. Unfortuneately they didn't give away their physics secret, which is one thing I would love to know about the GT franchise. I don't know what the purpose for high beams or low beams in GT would be, but nonetheless, if they're going all out for realism................then give us reverse lights too! 💡 . Good article tho 👍

I think you're reading into it too much.

The video they took could be used for any of the control stalks that sprout from the steering column. Windscreen wipers, indicators and indeed lights.

Well, you could annoy the hell out of a contrahent in front of you when racing online! Try to make him lose his nerve when he's leading in front of you and entering the last corner... :D

I don't think it's the most important thing in a driving simulation where you drive on tracks... (IMHO car damage & tire marks come first) but if all the lights were to be working it would add a lot of realism to the whole thing... especially when racing online/LAN.

Imagine a slower competitor in front of you moving to the right side and putting on his blinker to let you pass (o.k., might never happen though... :sly:)

Blinkers are really unnecessary. I can see reverse lights having a place (production cars only), but there's just too much function and little purpose to include turn signals.

I also don't feel the need to personally turn on my headlights if I'm in a race that spans from day to night, it should be automatic when it gets dark enough. Although, flashing your high beams when you are coming up to pass someone might be worthwhile to have.

I am just picturing the controller and how you'd have to come up with a way to add all this functionality and not screw up the game controls. I need to steer with the D-pad, I don't want that allocated for additional functions.

-> Since were talking about headlights, how about foglights? This is handy for adverse weather condition during racing on fouls weather. Or basically for looks during sunset/nighttime racing.

No offense, Vanishing Boy, but personally I'm not such a big fan of foglights that are being kept turned on just for looks... functional ones to attack the Nürburgring on a foggy day though... can't see why not.

Powerful extra lights mounted on rally cars for a Monte nighttime point-to-point special stage would be absolutely freakin' awesome IMHO :D

As long as these here are being kept out of GT5 everything's fine:

Oh yeah i'll take damage and tire marks over reverse lights any day of the week, i was just kinda poking fun that if the game had high/low beams, but no reverse lights.....ya get the idea.

True. Would be kinda weird.

Yeah, was thinking about that too. Simplicity and user-friendlyness... normally pretty much standard in the GT series.
What the hell, even if it's just brakelights as is + automatic headlights + tiremarks + online + maybe damage it'll be fine with me!

The high beam/low beam light thing has been done in GT4. Race on le Sarthe for a couple of laps and watch the replay, when you car is about halfway down the Hunaudiares(sp?) the headlights automatically switch to high beam, happens everytime. Not sure how they can add another button function to the controller, but if Logitech is building a steering wheel with steering column mounts(wipers, lights, blinkers) then I see the purpose. Rally would benefit from high/low beam lights and hazard lights, would be amazing to see how far they go with rally this time. Would weather and different surfaces make it in?

Well when prologue arrives, I can only hope that it has vehicular damage, or available soon after to test out.

Did not know that! Thanks 👍 gotta check that out tonight...

Tell me about it. I'd even like it if you could totally destroy your car in career mode, so you'd have to buy another one if you overdo it...
:mischievous:

Minor damages could be repaired or left as is... so you could keep on driving your first cheap car until it's really bashed up... :D

Can't help it, but I really doubt that PD will include damage...

Actually, I believe that's the PS2 engaging the headlight beam effect when it gets within range of the camera. I've notied that some graphic features are culled out at certain distances, and there is a tiny bit of visible pop-in here and there. If you watch the in-between race camera panning around Midfield, you'll see textures pop into existence at certain points as the camera pans around. That's because of the hardware limitations of the PS2.

I may be wrong, but that's my assumption.

Although i have only played Motorstorm on the PS3 i did notice that the track and car details are not affected by draw distance whatsoever. Perhaps i just wasn't looking hard enough and maybe gt5 may have to detailed graphics to be totally unaffected by draw distance but i certainly think it will be less of an issue in gt5 with the increased capability of the ps3

EDIT: getting back to the point i think that adjustable headlights is a good idea providing the are enough controls on my steering wheel to allow me to adjust the headlights without compremising the functionality as i dont know the button configuration for gt5 its hard to say weather it could replace a different button.

I've seen that too, since day one. Especially on the Nürburgring, maybe because it's a rather long and complicated track. To me it seems as if some blur filter that softens the otherwise pixelated edges is catching up with the rest of the imaging process.

Makes quite a lot of sense, if you consider the age of the PS2 hardware.

This is a very valid point. I've been thinking that this would be great for road racing. It would be interesting if GT5 featured such a system in which you blinked your lights if you're in a faster car trying to get past slower cars. In real life, I remembered something from the 2003 12 Hours of Sebring. Remember in 2003 when those beautiful Bentley EXP GTs raced this event? The Speed Channel crew was talking about these British Racing Green Bentleys had the lights on so that slower traffic don't confuse them for the scenery. I'm sure no one will be able to confuse any car in the game for the scenery in GT or in any game. There could be some more great uses for low beams. I would set up my controller to use the "Special" button as my button to flash the headlights rather than use for nitrous.

Only if you also get the option to 'flip the bird' in response.

Oh yeah! Never thought of that! Good one, TheCracker. Would be pretty cool for online races since you can't really curse out AI drivers. Only thing worse is if they are clones of Tony Stewart when provoked in GT5.

I'm sure he means detailed parts under the car. (axles, engines, driveshaft ect.)

Flashing lights to get slower cars out of the way seems kinda pointless. Isn't it a rule in motorsport that a slower car must get out of the way to allow a faster car to lap it? I would like to see that rule implemented before high/low beams to clear my way.
