Powering steering is nifty.

I never realized how much easier it was to turn a 4000 pound car with power steering as opposed to turning a 4000 pound car without power stering. The power steering isn't, like, working on my parent's car and I have to drive my mother places and stuff.

Don't take your power steering for granted! Or else.

Indeed - I just acquired a car with power-assisted steering which weighs not much more than my 960kg Fiesta. And nearly crashed it in a car park - I wasn't expecting the nose to turn in quite like that.

Turn the engine off though and you're in a world of pain. Starting with a hernia.
 
I like cars without power steering, but then most of the cars I've driven recently are under 2300lbs\, and they're actually cars without power steering, not cars with broken power steering.

I drove an Explorer without power steering for a very short distance, just long enough for it to get rolling fast enough to start with it's dead battery... that was tough.
 
Even though the steering wheel acts as a force multiplier..... you still need alot of strength to turn it without power steering.. So yes, without power steering, turning would be hell. (At least for me anyway)
 
There's a big difference between "no power steering" and "broken power steering". The gearing is totally different, making it much easier to steer a car designed to be manual than a car with no PS belt.

There is power steering and there is power steering, too. The Neons have great, subtle power steering that is minimally boosted and provides really good feedback through the wheel, and at 16:1 the turn-in is crisp.

Whenever I drive my mother's Accord, on the other hand, it feels like somebody shot my arms full of novocaine. The PS is way overboosted so it feels like you're driving with waldoes.

Exactly, with broken power steering it would normally rely completely on the power steering unit. With no power steering there's lots of things assisting you. I've experience the broken power steering when my truck's battery died and I had to push it to the side of the road. I've also experienced no power steering when driving my sisters old '64 falcon and they are definetly different.
 
I't's nigh on impossible to turn the wheel in my parents Fairmont when it isn't running.

But apparently power steering is pain in the arse when you're backing.
 
Actually, that's exactly when it's great, because you can palm the wheel one-handed. I like to throw my inside arm over the back of the passenger seat.
 
Yeah that is a good thingy, but (I'm yet to use power steering, parents wont let me drive the expensive car) according to my dad he has a hell of a lot of trouble backing down the boat ramp when we're launching the boat.. I'll ask him what the problem is exactly as I can't remember.

I think it had something to do with it would turn too much?

My car doesn't have servo assisted brakes, I think that's what you mean?

It also has no power steering, which i've gotten used to. Our old IS200 was so light you could practically turn the wheel with your finger, but it did have nice feedback.
