Which one should I get? I use Adobe Premiere 6.5 in school, but it costs too much and I just saw the Pinnacle Studio Version 8 out for $100. it's hard for me to decide so i'm gonna ask the community of GTP to help me out here ^^

Adobe Premiere 6.5 is quite impressive, along with DVDiT which comes with 6.5 for DVD Authoring. $100 is pretty hard to beat though.... Premiere is going to give you much more control over your project, but do you need that much control? With all the extra options comes the additional learning curve of figuring out the program.

Perhaps you should get whats in your budget range. For the cost difference, you could Studio 8 and a couple of hard drives....., your gonna need 'em.

Just my thoughts...

well Pako, yur rite about the fact that Adobe Premiere 6.5 offers a lot of effects and stuff, but is there a cheaper alternative? do they have a student version? i wish they had that *sigh*

Studio has many effects and runs quite well. One of my friends has Dazzle, and that takes forever. Studio(And I'm running the outdated v7) runs fast and also has many different formats to export files as, even streaming files. I just wish it would import better for files, but I also have VirtualDub(it's free) that can cut up avi files & such. I just wish i knew where I could find an MPEG or MPEG2 codec to encode with, rather than just decoding.

i really wanna get some more feedback. thank yu rjensen11 and Pako.

ATTENTION TO PEOPLE WHO EDIT VIDEOS, WHICH ONE IS BETTER: ADOBE PREMIERE OR PINNACLE STUDIO VERSION 8?

I forgot to note:
I don't know about PS8, but PS7 can only import the videos it makes, which are very close to (if not) uncompresed .avi files. This means that it doesn't import MPEG files, even though it exports them...

Well I borrowed a copy of pinnacle and I was too stupid to figure it out. I think i'll stick with Adobe Premiere 6 for my editing needs, I doubt my PC would cope with 6.5 probably.

I've been using Studio since version ?? that came with my Studio DC10+ capture card. Just upgraded to version 8 to use with our MiniDV cam !... I've never had any problems sith Studio. Nice 'n easy and it's been rock solid for me..

Never did figure Premiere out :odd:

ok, don't hold this against me... but i use a Mac G4 for video editing/encoding.
Final Cut Pro on the Mac platform is, imho, the *best* solution.

i've used premier on the PC, and all i can say is: it sux.

now before everybody starts flaming me... for anything other than DV editing, Apple sux big-time. software incompatibility and hardware quality is bar-none the worst i have ever had the displeasure of experiencing.

one thing you might consider if you're dead-set on using a peecee platform is this- adobe premier has been around, and has much more support that pinnacle (on a pc, that is)

Final Cut pro probably is the best solution out there, but I doubt most people who just want to do a little editing for a GT3 video (Like Thio here) would want to buy another computer and another expensive software package. Well, if you already have a mac i'm sure it's the best solution.

I'm still sticking with premiere, mainly because i've been using it recently.

Do your research, hombre! Apples kick Window's but in many categories! 2d image editing, 3d image modelling, etc. Plus, if you get the proper programs, it can also blow PC's away in office suites.

hm....

Thanks for your suggestions guys. I'll go and ask a couple of friends to chip in buying adobe premiere :)

btw, how do you decompress a .Z file?

argh, I'll start another thread about it

At school, we use Apple G4s to edit videos with Adobe Premiere. If my school was rich enough, we could get Final Cut Pro, but it won't make sense because the people in general probably would get something more affordable. I'd go with Race Idiot's comment earlier :)

You’re absolutely right, photoshop was originally programmed for the Mac OS- and it still out-performs its windows counterpart

I’m sure there’s a few others, as far as the office suite programs- if you’re talking about apple works- come back to reality… apple works is in the stone age compared to microsloth office 2000.

3D image modeling?!
Don't go there, hombre. i know a little bit 'bout it.
electric image is a dinosaur.
Lightwave on the MacOS is a joke- you can't get through 20 min on the app without a system failure. not to mention apple compatible graphic adapters don't hold a candle to the monster peecee based cards (e.g. wildcat, quadro 1000, even the old E&S outperform anything apple has)

Same goes for the maya apps.
Fact is: NT systems (2000) have the speed/reliablity/scalability us modelers need

However, in regards to my earlier post, the point I was really trying to make is this: apple quality has taken a nose dive BIGTIME.

I’ve got systems from as far back as ’84 (macintosh SE, running OS 6), a Quadra840AV, a 610, all running original hardware/monitors/keyboards even the mice work perfectly! Never been serviced, running perfect since they were taken right out of the box!

My G$733 with accompanying 17” studio display has been nothing but problems: won’t wake from sleep, display intermittently cuts out red channel, various hard drive failures on RAID, random TYPE 41 errors… these are just a few

All the issues with this system occurred while it was in warranty, some were fixed, some are still occurring even after being sent in for repair work… now its out of warranty and apple is giving me the ‘c-ya, you’re on your own’ routine

My Imac DV is the same.
Our Chicago office G4 systems are as buggy

If you log-into apples support discussions, there are pages and pages of the same issues- all quality based.

It’s a real shame…

I'm sorry that you mis-understood me. I didn't mean the selection of applications Apple has is better than Microsoft, but that the machines run programs better than x86 processors. Also, there are extremely good programs for 3d modellings that are on Apple-based computers. I know for sure that I heard on some TV program or on some special features thing on some DVD that Pixar uses a combination of 3d Studio Max on Apples. I admit, their Apples are custom supercomputers(ranked 2nd most powerful to the US Government), but still, if they can have 3d Studio Max on an Apple, imagine how much better it is on those than on Pentiums or Atholons! The only thing I could see similar to Apples is a dual-Xeon computer... I wish I had one of those....
