problem with the P.S.3

Alright so here's the thing whenever I play gt5 for about two hours the P.S.3 used to switch off.initially I thought it was because of over heating so I opened the P.S.3 completely and cleaned the dried up thermal paste (my P.S.3 is two years old ) and put a fresh paste on the heat sinks. Now my P.S.3 works fine when I play other games but when I play gt5 exactly after about1to to1 and half hours it switches off automatically again but every other game I canplay for hours. So can anyone suggest me some tips on what can be done to prevent this?

Yea it works fine for bf3,gta episodes from liberty city, mortal kombat, assassins creed 3, far cry 3 these are the games I play very often

Hmm, I'm not sure then. I asked in case you were otherwise playing very light games, but BF3 and GTA IV do stress the hardware. It could be a hard drive problem, has your PS3 ever turned itself off with a red flashing light afterwards?

That's what it sounds like to me too

Is it the slim model?

Slim models don't have the power switch on the back like the fat ones do, and he says he has to turn off the main power so I assume he means that switch, meaning he has a fat one. If that's the case this is not uncommon.

Yeah i know. Some people still call that button and power switch. That's why i made sure.

I have a fat one
Ok. Yeah it seems as if the heat sync (even though you put thermal paste on it) is bad.

Do me a favor just try taking the top cover off and play GT5 and see if it still does it. I know it sounds ridiculous but try it. You don't have a warranty anyway so you don't have to worry about voiding it

If it's a flashing red light it could be a hard drive error, my old fat used to turn off and flash the red light at me until I turned it off and on again, then I changed the hard drive after reading that could be the cause and it stopped.

Do you ever hear quiet clicking or tapping sounds coming from your PS3? It's hard to describe and I can't find a good video of it, but the hard drive might make some sounds if it's failing. Any corrupted data and/or extremely long load or save times?

I am having same issue with my PS3, I think my HDD has some bad sectors, I can play most disc based games, some of them work fine like MGS4, Dead Space and Assassin's Creed. But GT5, I got shutdown error with red light blinking when loading certain tracks or location in main menu, Uncharted Drake's Fortune, I can play bonus videos, cutscenes, but when I load certain levels or play from beginning, it will shutdown right after I take control of Nathan.

Tried full format, low level format, scan the HDD with PC utility, it says no bad sector, put it back to PS3, clean install 4.31, insert Uncharted game, shutdown every time I took control of Nathan on first level.

The issue also happens on PSN games on the HDD, some of them causing shutdowns, even scrolling the game list will cause it to shutdown or streaming movies from my PC ( randomly ) :(

Tried to install Windows XP on the HDD, I got CRC checksum mismatched blue screen error for NTkernel32.dll when running setup process after copying setup files + restart, I guess my HDD have serious issue.

I have no heat issue, running PS3 slim 2009 with top cover off, replaced thermal paste after 1 year of owning, the fan never goes above boot up speed, really cool air ( just like when booting up ) from the fan even after 24+hours running. The fan also never increasing it's speed when running heavy games like Uncharted, MGS4, GTA IV, GT5, Fallout 3.

Strangely Fallout 3 GOTY is not affected, I played for 8 hours straight couple of days ago, no shutdown or fan ever gone faster than idle speed.
