Problems with Controller...

Hey guys, I started playing LfS a few days ago and since I could not find some keyboard configuration that would suit me (I hate playing with the keyboard, anyway), I decided to buy an analog controller (similar in shape and amount of buttons as the PS2 classic controller).

Now the problem is, when I set the left analog stick to the steering axis, even if it is analog and even if in the Control screen of the game I can see the steering wheel indicator turning progressively as I move more of the stick to the left or to the right, in the actual game the wheels turn really sharply and almost all of a suddent (you can even see the pilot inside the vehicle twisting his arms in a nanosecond, applying 50 g's of acceleration to his poor appendices :D). Is there a way to fix this? Am I doing something wrong with the settings? With the keyboard, the wheel turning was very smooth, even TOO slow. Now, with the controller the wheels are either straight, or completely turned left or right in a matter of an instant... Which just results in the car going straight, obviously. The only way I could come up with was to set the wheel lock angle (in the Garage section) to its minimum amount, at least the wheel stop sooner and turn less. The car is drivable, in this way, but it still looks awful when I watch the replay, since every little time I have to correct for something, the wheels turn completely and the car zig-zags and leaves a nice black tire mark on the track.

Please help, I am desperate to play this game properly!

I know buying a wheel would be the perfect solution, but I have neither the money nor the physical room necessary for me to install it. So, if you can find a way for me to fix the controller settings correctly, I would greatly appreciate it 👍

Also, I tried another controller (a friend of mine's) and it does the same thing, so I doubt it depends on the brand. Most likely it depends on the settings.

Thank you in advance 👍

Options > Controls > Axes/FF > Calibrate Axes

Then click on "Steer" and move your left analogue stick fully to the left and the right. Then click on "Calibrate Axes"

Guve that a shot and tell us if it helps or not...

I am worthless driving with the mouse :indiff: :D

And yes, I did calibrate it already.

It turns out that there is an option in Misc where you can set the delay of the response, to "smooth" out the controls via joypad. I guess I overlooked that one at first. It doesn't solve the problem 100% (not as controllable as I would like it to be) but it helps quite a bit.

Now I am finally down to the same times with the controller (using manual) that I used to have with the keyboard (using automatic).

Some more practice and I am sure I will get better - as with all games driven in manual gearing 👍

Thanks for the help, anyway.
