Problems with G27, expert advice please?

Hi everyone,

I'm having trouble with my Logitech G27. The wheel started to lose calibration when I turned it too fast. I found a fix online (one that's been confirmed by others), and, not having a warranty, opened up the wheel housing, took the black cap off the right motor, tightened the screws and added a drop of glue to keep the little black plastic wheel attached to the motor shaft.

In the process of opening the case I managed to disrupt the "rack and pinion" system. The black plastic bar that slides back and forth according to the wheel's turning had come off the track, so I put it back, making sure it was centered on the gear and the wheel was centered.

When I plugged the wheel into the computer, instead of calibrating by spinning all the way around in both directions, it does a couple of 90 degree turns instead. It doesn't calibrate and the wheel motion is not recognized by the computer, though all the buttons work fine. Plugging in to another computer gave the same result.

Did I mess up the optical sensor, or is there a problem with the rack and pinion, or could something else be amiss?

I'm hopeful someone can help me here - at the Logitech forums the mantra is "do not open." Not very helpful for someone who doesn't mind fixing it himself. Thanks!

Well, I fixed it. For anyone having the same problem, this is what I found did:

I opened up the case again and took the cap off the right motor again. I thought the problem must lie with the optical sensor. I think what happened was the board with the sensor on it was a little crooked, because previously I had tightened one of the screws a little too much (one of two that screw into the motor, the topmost one). Since the board rests against this screw, unscrewing it a little adjusted the position of the sensor board, letting that little black wheel spin more freely.

A very small change, but it made the difference between the wheel working and not working. Everything seems to be fine now, amazingly. :)

I'm glad that turned out well for you, its always scary when you take something apart and can't get it back together properly again.

Thanks for posting your fix, I'll make sure I remember this if I ever have to fix mine.

I had a problem kind of like that, I'd secured the little black disc too close to one side (either the transmitter or reciever) luckily I was able to free up the glue and move it to exactly the middle between the Tx-Rx and all was good.

Yeah, that would be the same problem, although in my case it was the board that moved, not the wheel (the wheel was still tightly attached to the axle - I'm surprised it's been loosening for anyone, but I guess they're not all created equal).

You're welcome for posting my findings. It can be terribly difficult to find answers to problems online. In all my searching I only found one other similar issue, and there was no good fix found.
