problems with new posts and smilies...

Hey, first I wanna say this forum is pretty cool, and well run :) I've been having two problems with it tho since my arrival a few days ago..

1. The little yellow envelopes that show that somthing new has been posted to a thread that I have been a part of.

~somtimes after I've already viewed the latest post to a thread and click on the link to go to the forum again, (not a back button), it will show it as a silver envelope or whatever. (the normal one that means you've read it or whatnot) The problem is somtimes I will open the page again and threads I've already looked at will have yellow envelopes again? (I know it's not you guy's fault) but it's pretty annoying to go re-check a thread because it looks like it's been posted too again, when in fact it hasn't. Also, somtimes if I post to a thread, I'll get a yellow envelope next to it and somtimes I won't.

2. Somtimes when I have probles with the placement of smilies..

~somtimes when after I've typed somthing and then click on a smiley, it will delete all of what I have typed and put a smiley in its place. (no, I don't have the reply highlighted either) Also, somtimes no matter where in my reply I have put the cursor, if I click on a smiley, it'll put it either at teh beginning or end. Not where I chose to put it.

Sorry for the lengthy confusing descriptions, LOL. I'd be really appreciative if you have any ideas on them, or need a better explanation.

FYI-I'm running win2k

Thanks,
Mason Holmes

Hmmm...I'm not quite sure I understand your question here.

Since we're using a highly customized version of vBulletin, we're running into a few problems (this being one of them). However, this is a known issue and I am working to implement a fix for this as soon as possible. :)

If Mason's saying what I think he is, then I too have had the same problem. It seems he's saying that the "New Unread Posts" function sometimes does not work - particularly if you're jumping in and out of the same thread. For what it's worth, I think it's a cacheing issue, and will test this theory out the next time I notice it.

Thanks Giles, let me know the results of your expirementing! :)

I think caching has a bit to do with it, but timing does as well. The database might not have updated as quickly as you're clicking around.

I dunno, it does it to me somtimes even after I haven't had the page open for a half hour or more..
But, you could still be looking at a cached page, depending on your browser settings. Make sure you click refresh, and let me know what happens... :)

refresh doesn't change anything. I just re-opened the gt3 section, after spending a half hour looking over what i hadn't yet read, and now almost all of em are yellowed again, AHHHHHHH!

Well, I'm stumped, Mason! I'll see if I can duplicate your problem (I don't usually pay much attention to the letters)...

Yeah, I was actually posting a message that it had cleared up, after it seemed to have righted itself last night. (it was correctly showing what I'd read and I had no problems with it for a few hours) Then I decided maybe I should wait and see if I was being too quick to judge. About an hour later, BAM, it said I hadn't read 2/3 of the messages, some of which I had posted the last reply to, hehe. Not sure what's up, haven't seen this with any other board I've been to. It just seems super random? again, thanks :)

anything I should be looking for in my internet settings? I'm running a manditory win2k, (I'm a tester for the schools future laptops). I can't think of anything that I haven't already checked but maybe you'll have an idea I haven't yet thought of..

ok, now it apparently goes the other way too, or is now... What I mean by this is I opened the GT3 forum for the first time today to find that only a few threads were marked with a yellow envelope, (although I have it setup to send me a notification email for anything I've read that gets posted, or somthin like that). But, my email account was full of notification messages. Then the GT3 and automotive forum stayed with only a few threads that were "new" until just a second ago. I went back to the GT3 one and it was chocked full of stuff I hadn't read, which follows the notification messages in my email account.. (if that made any sense, lol)

Hmmm...I'm getting a little confused... :weird: What time zone do you have set in your profile (My GTPlanet > Edit Options)?

OK. This has just happened to me in the F1 Forum.

I looked at some threads. I posted in one, so was the last poster in the F1 forum. I went to MyGTPlanet using the link in the top navigation bar. I edited my options, then clicked the GT Forum Index link at the top of the page. I get shown list of the forums, but they're all yellow. This in spite of the F1 Forum saying that I'm the last poster.

I hit Refresh, but still all yellow (so not a cacheing issue it would seem). I'm on GMT.

Yeah, if you just make a post in a forum that no one else has since your last visit, it will be counted as a new post either way (because, it is). Is this the issue you were having, Mason? I have never really considered this a problem.

well, that is only one of the "problems" :P the problem with what you said is that it is not consistent in this, (at least not for me). I can go make my own thread, (most times), have no replies to it but it won't be marked in yellow, lolol. (even when I've gone back and checked at later times) this is confusing and crazy!!
Thx!

got somthing interesting to add, lol.. the "read first unread message" link, after you click on the thread. well, it ALWAYS works correctly. seems it would malfunction too if/when the little envelope color markings are off. IE-if it decides I've read all the messages in a forum-but I actually haven't-if I go into the thread and hit the first unread link, it will take me straight to the, true, first undread message. wierd..
