Welcome!

This is my first real project car for GT5. I had plenty of them in Forza 2 and 3.

In an effort to learn the subtleties of tuning in GT5, I have picked a lower horsepower car, some restrictions for it, and a goal of a sub 8 minute lap of the Nordschleife.

The car, as you can see is the 1986 Toyota MR2 1600 G-Limited Super Charger.

The restrictions I have set are:
No slicks.
No weight mods.
No engine internals are to be modified.
"Bolt-on" engine upgrades only.
Stock gears. (Clutch and Flywheel mods OK)

My fastest time thus far is an 8:09.64x, and I know in proper hands the tune and setup I have on it would dip just under the 8 minute barrier.

Anyone out there interested in helping to get it there?

I have Sport Soft on it now.

Ideally, what I would like is for someone to "borrow" the car and give feedback on my tune.

Share the car and send me a friend request 'chuyler1'. I'll drive your car, then i'll tune a car and share it for you to drive.

Fun car + track combo, I'm gonna try this.

Could you be more specific about the car specs? Aero? Custom suspension? Final BHP?

I took mine out for a spin, hadn't used it much since purchase. Did an engine overhaul and chassis maintenance at GT Auto, then tried to remain minimalist on parts from Tune Shop. ECU, Race Air Filter, Sport Exhaust, Catalytic Converter, Supercharger to bring it up to 220HP. Rounded out the setup with Twin Plate Clutch, Sports Flywheel, and Custom LSD. Where the car meets the road, fully custom suspension, Sport Medium on front, Sport Soft on rear. The medium helps compensate for the oversteer and trimmed with camber. 220HP and 1070KG for this configuration is 8:12 on Nordschleife at the moment, though I'm probably far from the best driver around here... still got manifolds and exhaust upgrades to work with. Point being, I think you can safely set the bar a little higher, maybe 7:45" is attainable, especially if you go with custom transmission.

Ok, what I will do is post what I have added to the car, and my setup.

If you have the car, go for it.

I added chyuler1 to my friends list and the car is shared.

I know that in the right hands that car can get to the sub 8 minute. I'd feel great with a 7:59.999. :)

Best I could do with your car was an 8:19. Your tune is not to my liking at all. The suspension feels loose and it is very difficult to control at the limit. When oversteer occurs (and it will occur) attempting to control it usually whips the car back in the other direction resulting in an immediate spin out. I'm really not sure how you managed an 8:10 with this setup but kudos to you!

I ran the 1st sector several times to come up with new settings and used the GT5 Quick Tune spreadsheet (search this forum to find it) for help with spring rates and dampers. I backed off some of your camber but running higher camber in the rear felt pretty good. I swapped the negative front toe for positive front toe to aid with stability.

Finally, I fiddled with brake balance. I typically run front-biased brakes but I noticed the car's stopping distances were much longer with a setting of 6/3 (which is what I use on this car when I run racing soft tires). I tried your balance one more time but with rear biased brakes the rear tires overheat when you trail brake. So as a compromise, I just switched it to 5/5. This was the best mix for decent stopping distances while still allowing me to trailbrake to get the car to turn in...without locking the rear tires.

Anyway my best time was 8:05.884 but there is certainly room for improvement because my run was far from perfect. I'm not used to racing this track on sport soft tires so I didn't push the car to the limit on every turn...and some turns I over did it so I'd say there is at least 3-4 seconds that I could squeeze out of this run if I had more time to play. I'll post the video as soon as its done uploading.

Max Power: 188hp, left this the same
Weight: 1070kg, left this the same
Performance Points: 409, left this the same
Traction Control: was 2, now off
Brake Balance: was 5/7, now 5/5
Ride Height: was -20/-20, now -5/-5
Spring Rate: was 4.6/4.6, now 5.5/7.3
Extension: was 4/4, now 5/7
Compression: was 4/4, now 6/6
Antiroll: was 1/1, now 4/2
Camber: was 1.0/1.5, now 0.5/1.0
Toe: was -0.20/+0.20, now +0.05/+0.20
LSD: Not installed

Just as a tuning tip for future cars...never drop the car that low on sports tires. In fact I rarely drop below -10 on any street car even with racing tires...and I certainly wouldn't go that low for a track like Nurburgring. I also noted you used the same springs front and rear. This car has a weight distribution of 45/55 so you need to run stiffer springs in the rear to support the extra weight back there. On twisty tracks, antiroll bars are your friend. They allow you to transfer the weight of the car from one side to the other without upsetting the balance and control.

Not a good setup for me. Car felt very sluggish. It resisted turning and when it did turn it felt like it would snab back into place instead of smoothly returning to normal.

I experienced the same binding/unbinding that chuyler1 did. It caused me to crash twice on the one lap I did of the ring. My time was 8.28. I'd like to try the second gen tune for this car when you have it.

Now for chuyler1's tune...

I'll throw my numbers up later if you want to try them. I ran a 8:06 after adding manifolds to bring it up to 233HP. Still got semi-ti and ti exhaust upgrades to work with. Suspension could use some more work, and a transmission tune would definitely get it under 8:00 easily. I did not install an aero wing either.

But I see Chuyler1 managed the same with 188HP, nice work or nice driving or both.

Thanks...I think the original car could hit 8:00 with just a tranny. The gears feel really long and I spent most of the time in 3rd gear. On previous attempts I tried downshifting to 2nd but that gear was too short.

I think if you got rid of the rear toe or reduced it you would pick up a few seconds also.

Here are my numbers by the way, pretty crude setup, was my first rough attempt with the car. I'd like to see what kind of time for comparison you can run at 188hp with it chuyler1.

+Single Plate Clutch
+Sport Flywheel
+Custom LSD @ 10/25/12
+Suspension @
* RH: 0 / 0

That's an interesting setup. Very stiff springs for such a high ride. I'm not a fan of using different tire compounds front and rear. I imagine it reduces oversteer in your case by removing some front grip...however it will cost dearly in braking distances as well as possibly producing too much understeer.

I resolved the same issue by running more camber in the rear than in the front. That has the same effect by allowing the rear tire to lock into a groove mid corner while the front tire slips a little. I learned this trick trying to tune the RUF BTR. The benefit of my setup is that you don't sacrifice straight line braking distances (front tires do more of the braking when weight transfers forward)

But anyway, I'll give it a spin the next time I have a chance. Did you try out my settings?

That was a rather clean lap, but in some hi speed sectors (Schwedenkreuz, Angstkurve) I slowed down exaggeratly to keep a good control of the car.

I doubt I can shave 5 seconds off with that setup, but with racing air filter + engine overhaul + racing flywheel + twin plate clutch it definitely can be done.

You mentioned "top speed". Does that imply that you used the custom transmission?

If you watch my video on the previous page I braked for Schwedenkreuz. I tried several times to coast around it but the suspension would lift off (not enough downforce). That's a tough turn and if anything is at stake, I take it slow. For Angstkurve I lifted off slightly but got right back on the throttle. My video doesn't show sector times, i wish it did. I'd like to know where you gained a second on me. Maybe I can check the replay when I get home.

It's very interesting how our tunes are so different yet we posted such close times. But having the LSD probably meant you could take care of oversteer differently. For example, you don't need the rear toe if the LSD keeps the car in check while braking.

Yes I did. I totally overlooked that line in the OP, hencefore my run was done with full custom tranny.

Oddly though, I gave it another go with the stock transmission and racing air filter fitted (188 BHP, 409 PP) and was quite surprised to pull off a 8.03.164 which didn't felt as clean as my 8.04 lap. This probably means the car isn't getting much benefit from the custom gears, because I don't see myself gaining 5 seconds on the ring just for having one extra measly hp added. But the LSD does help for sure.

Yeah, in my video, I was spinning tires in 2nd gear the few times I dared to drop down to it. The LSD would certainly help with pulling out of those tight chicanes. I'm surprised there wasn't a difference with using the 6-spd tranny. I guess the car has a pretty smooth torque/hp band so even though it feels boggy at 6,000rpm its actually doing alright. I know I could squeeze at least 1-2 seconds out of my run. But for me, time gained one place is easily lost in another since I don't know the track as well as others.

I am enjoying the discussion that this has brought up.

I have not had a chance to get back on the car.

Tiger 12 has bitten me hard.

I will have time this coming week to start adjusting as a part of the feedback I am seeing here.

BTW, I tried my settings from page 1 during an online race at 450pp. My car has additional mods to get it up to 450pp including a custom tranny and an LSD with some light settings. The car was real tail happy. I did OK on a 5-lap sprint but later in the evening I was losing 15 seconds per lap at Nurburgring. I think my best lap was only a 8:15 online because the car was dangerously slick and got worse as the laps progressed. And that was with extra power mind you. So anyway, my tune is good for offline, but garbage for online. The leaders were running 7:50-7:55s.

Video from the short race...

I guess this project is a bust.

It is also glaringly apparent that I have much to learn.

Thanks for the help though, I appreciate it.
