PS1 or PS2

I am hooked on GT2 on my playstation 1 and am thinking about upgrading to a playstation 2 really soon.

I have some questions and would appreciate some advice from you knowledgeable people:

1. Is it true that all my old playstation1 games will play on a playstation 2? If so I can continue to play GT1 and GT2 on my playstation2 when I get one.

2. Is it true that my playstation1 controllers will work on a playstation 2?

3. What do you reckon would be a good price for a second hand playstation2 with 1 controller and 1 game in England? The consol is about £150 new.

Regards,

Used is about 20% less than new in most places. You're really not saving much.

Yes all your games will work - they require a PS1 memory card which will in turn not work for PS2 games.

Yes your controllers will work. However, the PS2 controllers have pressure sensitivity buttons which is used on many PS2 games.

Frankly, at this point I might wait for the PS3. It'll be around in a couple years and you can save your money for PS2 games / hardware and put it toward a newer greater system. Keep in mind the PS2 is already 3 ... 4(?) years old.

Thanks for the response, I'm not sure I want to wait 2 years and I may even consider a PS3 at that time even if I do buy a PS2 now. You said PS1 games will work on PS2 however would require a PS1 memory card, I was under the assumption the PS1 memory cards would not work in the PS2 console, am I wrong with that? Thanks again.

Yep, a PS1 game on the PS2 needs a PS1 memory card to save, you can't save a PS1 game onto a PS2 card, a PS2 game will need a PS2 memory card though and will not save onto the PS1 card

It's not even a rumour, since it's not even vaguely likely to be fractionally true.

Well, you can get a used PS2 for 100-125 € on eBay:mischievous: So it's not THAT expensive :banghead: When PS3 will come out, it will be roughly 4-500€:banghead:

Maybe it's worth it buying a used PS2 now and, when the PS3 will have a good price, go for that:tup:

sorry to bring an old topic... but can i use GT2 in my ps2?? cuz when i put it in, the graphics are all squarey, like really bad!! so bad that it's hard to even tell what car i'm driving.

the thing about this GT2 is that the bottom of it is black and i dont remember it being like that. and the front is black and white

You can change the load times and graphics of your PS1 game when playing it on your PS2. Start the PS2 but don't load a game, press triangle on the browse option and then triangle again and you should see a menu about graphics and load times. Press X for each option and choose smooth and fast respectivly. Go back to the main screen and load the game. It certainly works for GT.

But will the PS3 support both PS1 and PS2 games?

I hope, but susepct that it will only suport PS2 games.

I personaly don't care if PS3 will support PS1 games or not , because I run GT1 and GT2 and CMR2 and F1 96 ( with Murray Walker and Martin Brundle ) on my PC with the Epsxe ( great ) PS1 emulator. The graphics are 10 times better, Epsxe gives you a higher resolution and ( depending on your graphic card ) full scene anti aliasing ( no jaggies ). Unless of course Sony comes up with a new trick that improves the quality of the games made for the PS1 running on the PS3. But I doubt it because generally backward compatibility is a real p.i.t.a. for hardware manufacturers.
I even run GT2 on my Dreamcast using the Bleemcast emulator CDROM.
