I have a PS3 320GB Slim, I used to have a 60GB 'fat' PS3, on that I could play my Playstation 2 games such as Gran Turismo 3 and Gran Turismo 4, this PS3 got YLOD, I then bought my current one the 320GB, I was aware that I couldn't play PS2 games on this no more when I bought it. But, now I really want to play them, is there a way I can play these games on my Current PS3, could I use a external disc drive? Or anything else?
P.S: please no comments saying about buying a PS2

Thanks.

There are lots of reparo services that will fix that YLOD PS3 (without losing data) for a reasonable price, about $100.

Unfortunately, I took apart the PS3 to see what was 'Salvageable' the motherboard had fried, everything else was in great condition and is in a box collecting dust, next to me now. Is there no way I can play these games with my current PS3?

Your alternatives are to see if the PS2 games in question are available on PSN, legally rip the DVDs onto your computer and get an emulator (apologies if this isn't legal, but I think it is... Don't do it if it's not, of course) or, I'm sorry to say, buy a PS2. PS3s no longer have the capability to play PS2 games that haven't been ported and uploaded to the PSN store by Sony.

I wish GT 3 and 4 were available as PSN downloads or HD versions.

Unfortunatly there is no way I know of, other than the unwished for solution of buying a PS2. If it is the motherboard, then at least you'll have a quote upfront if you do decide to fix that old PS3.

Last resort - wait for the PS4 and play the old games via the cloud function.

If you had another motherboard do you think it would work. I'm in USA not sure if they would be the same voltage or not maybe someone can chime in on this. If so I'd be more than happy to mail you one (if this can get thru customs) someone chime in on this also. If you think it would work PM me with pictures of your board, I have several I bought off eBay years age.

Maybe, not sure, I sold the fan on eBay too, could buy a new one though, see what happens?

Yeah, so where are GT1-4? Where is written that the whole back catalog of PlayStation games will be on some server waiting for us to play them, if we can't even buy them?

Not really following your question there...

The back catalogue will hopefully be available via Gaikai on the PS4. On the PS3, no chance. I only mentioned GT3/4 as they're the only two PS2 titles and that was the only platform being discussed.

Motherboards should be the same across the world for their respective model, it's just the power unit that is different per region. Though you might want to get a proper confirmation on that Tails and OpelGT.

I mentioned the past GT games because those are the games I, personally, care most about and extremely ticked they haven't been polished in HD and put in the PSN Store. GT is supposedly OkayStation's biggest franchise. It hasn't been treated as such. Having the old games on PSN would've kept many of us busy as we waited for GT5 to release.

The prospect of having games in the cloud is no big deal until SONY gives us an idea of the percentage of the back catalog that will be available.

I think you'll find it's a licensing thing. If Sony can't re-license all of the cars in the game, they can't re-release it. It's the same reason that has prevented them from re-releasing Wipeout 2097, 3, Fusion and XL and also why Sega have re- released Jet Set Radio but not JSR Future; licensing the soundtracks is too difficult to be worth the effort, or so I've read.

That's a shame.

The "okaystation" was unintentional and not even part of the auto correction choices

Yeah, I recently found myself wishing that I had purchased GTI Club+ back in the day. I re-downloaded the demo and was having a blast with it. Totally different with a good wheel vs the DS3. Unfortunately licensing issues seem to have doomed my want for it's arcade tomfoolery.

Also: Hehe, at first glance, it appears that you are implying that the licensing of the vehicles for Wipeout was a problem.
