24 HD channels of Olympics coverage
While Sony was launching its HX8 televisions in the UK, the company also revealed that it would be bringing the BBC's live Olympic coverage to Bravia TVs and PS3s, and also to some Blu-ray players. The coverage, consisting of 24 HD channels of live streamed events from the Games, will be available as a TiVo app this summer. It will also benefit from on-demand viewing options, too.
Sony said that it had partnered up with the Beeb over the app, which will arrive first on the company's Bravia TV sets.
The app goes beyond the Olympics, though, as it will offer much of the Beeb's sport coverage on an on-going basis, coupled with the additional content usually accessed via the red button.
Sony is expected to deploy the app to its smart TVs in time for Wimbledon, and it will follow presumably fairly swiftly on the PS3. Blu-ray players, however, will have to wait longer for the app to arrive.
The Beeb's 24 channels of HD Olympic goodness are set be shown to Sky, Freesat and Virgin customers, offering a rather staggering 2,500 hours of coverage of the Games. Enough for even the most ardent track and field fan, we'd hope...
