Hey, guys. I have a big problem with my PS3 Slim 160GB that I got for Christmas back in 2011, and or my 1080P HDMI. Two days ago, I turned on my PS3 and went to a Text Chat Room with a friend. Now my PS3 was running perfectly fine, with a 1080P tv and a 1080P HDMI. But around three minutes into having my PS3 on, my screen went entirely black for some reason; it looked like my tv was off.

Anyway, I turned on my PS3 again and it showed a 480P resolution on my tv, and my PS3 said that it had detected an HDMI Cable. So it 'yes' so I could use my HDMI, but it was in 480P.. I went into the Display Settings, and looked at the Video Output settings, but it only would let 480P work.

Next, I turn off my PS3 and grab another 1080 HDMI, hold down the power button for a few seconds, and all that. Now it says that I could use 1080P, and I was glad. It looked perfectly fine until I loaded up GTA V.

GTA V looked like it had been downscaled to less than 720P, and I couldn't even read the words on the screen because it was blurry and blocky.

I'd like to know if my HDMI Cable is the problem, or it's my PS3. And if you know which is the problem, please tell me how to fix it if it's possible. Thanks.

Do you have the other resolutions checked in the display menu? (720P, 1080i etc.)
If a 720P game cannot select it's native resolution when it is not enabled in the settings it uses a lower resolution or the default lowest resolution.
So be sure to enable 720P also.

I've had the same blurry picture when playing GTA4, until I realized I did not have 720P enabled.

Are you able to test the suspect HDMI cable between other devices?

Can you try the same cable and console with a different TV and/or the same cable and TV with a different console? Someone else here recently posted about the same thing and it turned out it was his TV's fault, he unplugged all other HDMI devices from it and got 1080p back. In his case, though, the PS3 just wouldn't let him select the 1080p resolution, 720p and 1080i were still there.

If you tried another cable I'd be surprised if that was the problem, but it could be your TV. HDMI CEC is responsible for telling the PS3 which resolutions can be displayed on the TV, so it could be that your HDMI cable is bad and the CEC bus isn't able to communicate properly, or it could be the TV has some sort of glitch in the firmware. It could still be on the PS3's end of the connection but really you won't know until you try substituting the hardware to see if it repeats the problem.

Yes, I have tried to use and test every option. It always checks 480P for some reason, and it won't test any resolution higher than that. I wish I could use 720P.

There was a store bear my house who sold hdmi cables for only 4 bucks. Naturally I bought one. Appears there are cables who cannot work 1080p and that causes your ps3 to downscale the output.

Buy another cable and be sure to buy one that display 1080p

I wouldnt do that just yet. There was someone that had the same problem not to long ago. I'm not sure if he resolved the problem or not.

If I can find the thread I'll link it.
