First. Sorry if this has been done to death at this point, just thought I'd offer some perspective from a mediocre racer without just saying "GAME SUX DO NOT BUY!"

So I picked up my copy of Shift 2 yesterday, and I played for about 3 hours total (7% into career mode) I know there are other posts about this but I hope I can help somewhat with people's experience and view on this game.

First it's slightly disappointing that the game is in 720 on PS3 and 1080 on 360, but I get by, and you probably will too. The graphics are good I bet they are great on PC or 360! This does not take away from track design and graphics, the tracks are really well done I think and the background stuff is cool, flags wave, cameras flash, almost distracting you! trees blow in the wind as well, it's cool.

There isn't as much car presentation in this game as there is in Forza or PS3, like just not as much emphasis on this part of the game in NFS, it's not terrible but it's noticeable.

After the first race in the GT-R you might find like I did that the steering sensitivity had to be turned down immediatley (this option is under controls and you hit R2 to go to the next menu and it's in there), I cranked mine down to 10% and that seemed to work and make the game feel much much better. So don't freak out and say this game sucks and is arcade, because once you get a sensitivity that works for you I think it will feel a lot better.

Next, shut Vaugn Gitten Jr. the hell up! That guy is about annoying as F! (Thanks my man BeMoto on this one) This option is under the speech thing turn it off, then you don't have to hear him go "There is the green light, gogogo! You can own this one!" seriously Vaughn, we know what to do when the light changes from red to green pal, so cram it.

After this, the game started to feel right to me. It doesn't have GT5's physics, no, but it's got physics, and it's got a racing feel that is freaking insane, even when you are out front, you feel a pressure, I don't know what it is, maybe it's the sound? I don't know but it's enjoyable for sure.

The customization is pretty good, I mean if you are coming from just GT5 then it's great, but Forza had some pretty deep customization as far as body kits mixing and matching, you can't really do that in Shift 2, you have kits that are just there for your, kit 1, 2 or 3 etc. but one thing that Shift has that is really cool and gives you a feel of driving an actual modded car, even if it isn't the works. An example is the cockpit mods, adding gauges, shift lights etc, it really works. Unlike modding a car out fully and not modding the cockpit sometimes you forget you are driving a car that you decked into a race car, kinda boring almost... Shift 2 isn't in this aspect.

The cars are class specific like in Forza, which is cool, it provides SOME form of limitation at the very least, granted you can mod your car to the top of the class and burn it up if you really want to (just like in Forza) but at least it has to be a car in the certain class.

The AI is cool, like big time, you can change the setting to match what you want to race against, they will overtake you, and if you make a mistake, you pay the price, and if you've never played Forza then this is a great feature for you, because in GT5 you mine as well be driving on the track by yourself for the most part, and the AI races each other, at least it felt like that to me. They battle each other for position just as much as they battle you, they don't seem content with just being in 3rd the whole race. I like that too.

It has some bugs in it, I've found I don't know if anyone else has noticed but sometimes as you cross the finish line for the first time in a race it has a small glitch, and once or twice when I've restarted a race my car is in the starting grid facing sideways!! I have to do a left turn when the green comes up and play catch up! I laughed obviously at this, but I imagine it could get old if it happens a lot.

I guess I'll close at the autolog, I love it, it's almost 'distracting' like you load the game and you can hit select and see autlog times of your friends, and not only this but it shows what car, class, and mod points they were at when they broke your time or set their own. And what's better, is you can't be a cheap ass either! If you go off track and shortcut it simply will not record your time.. That's a great feature.

This game isn't Gran Turismo, it isn't Forza, it might not be full sim to you leet sauce sim mofos, it's a different kind of animal, it's fun as all get out I think, and it's a HUGE change from GT5's boring pace, and dead end A-Spec, or HORRIFIC B-Spec (these are my opinions on GT5 btw, maybe not yours)

I like it, if you are on here add me on PSN, I'll play some autolog or online with you! PSN - mcm127

I also plan on giving Shift 2 some time before I jump to conclusions but boy does the control suck - at least until some adjustments are made. What were the developers thinking! But even with some adjustments I still am having problems -mcm127, are you using a wheel?

I am waiting for the delivery on a wheel but with the PS3 controller (sensitivity and dead zone at 0) it is very hard to make small movements without massive car corrections. I even picked a weak car (VW) to get a feel.

Any suggestions on settings for the PS3 controller?

Wow, a review of a video game that I actually agree with on all points!
Very well written and quite accurate compared to my experience too.
I have never played Forza, but I agree with the GT5 points.
I have also been playing Test Drive Unlimited 2, and it also has aspects that are better than either S2 or GT5, and aspects that are worse.
Honestly, I can see taking various things from GT5, TDU2, and S2 and creating the perfect game from the parts.
It seem each game has their nuthuggers who will defend their game no matter what else comes out. Personally, I buy every driving and racing game that comes out and have no loyalty to any specific brand. I just bought a PS3 last fall in anticipation of GT5. I have dozens of driving games on PC. And although I didn't feel like getting an X-Box just to play an older game like Forza 3, I will buy an X-Box when Forza 4 comes out. I am sure I will find parts of it I prefer to any other game as well as parts that I don't like.
In the end, I doubt any single game will ever fully meet my idea of a perfect game, or anyone else's for that matter. But it's about enjoying the things you like, and down playing the things you dislike.

I'm a DS3 user, and to be honest the only adjustments I've made are steering sensitivity to 10% once I did that, it just took some getting used to, it's about as touchy as Forza was to me when I first played.

Thanks very very much for this review, it covers almost everything i wanted to know. When i buy this game i think i will add you as a friend, my PSN is bossie-_-

I am sure that I will get an xbox when Forza 4 comes out as well, I am sure that game will totally dominate. I really believe that.

Totally agree with this. But I'm scared to turn him off because I'm afraid I might miss something. I do like the cool tips and facts he says about the tracks sometimes though...

Contact is a no no. I don't think I've even brushed another car without totally losing my **** and ruining a lap. Just like it should be!!!

Agreed, it's a great bonus!!

Well said.

I had a bit of a different experience, so I would like to offer some comments as well.

mcm127 and I were texting our thoughts back and forth last night. We are both using the DS. No wheels.

I admit I had some high expectations after seeing all the videos released on this game. I was fired up! My first impression jumping on the track was disappointing. The 720 resolution was much less crisp than what I was used to with GT5. So that was a bit distracting, but I was only focused on it for a few minutes. The gameplay was really smooth and I was completely occupied with trying to figure out the steering.

Yikes! I was completely dismayed to start. Swerving everywhere. What I thought would be minor corrections often turned to wild side to side lines down the Suzuka straights. It was crazy but I stuck with it. I drove the first few races without knowing that you can reduce the controller sensitivity and set the steering dead zone to 0. After mcm127 explained it to me, things got a lot better.

You kind of have to think of it like hypersensitivity rather than input lag in my opinion. Get in cockpit view and check it out. You barely touch the stick and the driver's hands start swinging back and forth wildly. I really believe its more a question of using a delicate touch than it is a question of huge control problems. Try turing your sensitivity to about 10 like he recommended and take the steering deadzone out. Then don't go all ape sheet on the analog stick. Be smooth.

Anyway, that and turn off Vaughn and that initially-cool-then-suddenly-horribly-repetitive "dream" music or whatever it is. Jesus. What where they thinking on that one? It makes buying and modding cars MUCH more enjoyable.

Once that was figured out, I can say I started to love the gritty action of the races. The AI is insane sometimes. They will push you right into a wall without hesitation. Makes it more fun to have competition there in my opinion. You have to watch your back. And they will be there. That is the other thing. Its nice to actually have the AI competitive throughout the race without having to have a perfectly PP's machine like you would in GT5. The career racing was entertaining in that way.

They also have that feature where the game monitors your track mastery. Big fun.

By far the best moment though - logging in this morning to see that my buddy had beaten 4 of my times. The game has a great menu system so I was able to easily check the tracks, jump on, and take a few of the times back before heading off to work for the day. What a great feature! Fun, exciting, different, motivating.

Leveling didn't feel grindy (yet! I'm only level 8). Plenty of money for cars. Really nice looking custom liveries. Tons of wheel options.

I was definitely NOT a fan at first. I was really mad in fact. I felt upset that I expected so much, and couldn't even drive the car. I was getting rammed off the course and couldn't make corners. Drove eratically through the straights. Swerving wildly because I wasn't used to the controls. Day two - I'm in love. The laps this morning felt awesome. Car was under control, and the competitive aspect of the game was there. When you get used to the resolution the graphics look very good. Gritty in a nice way. I don't care that its not the worlds greatest sim, becuase the game feels amazing when you start to manage your car and really understand the handling.

Ugh. Thanks for convincing me to get a PS3 d-bag! Your scorpions are in the mail.

I've had a few instances where there has been contact and it does suck, but you know what I haven't done yet? Is roll my car, in these videos I know there were people that were wondering if every single wreck was going to be a violent flip door to door, and I haven't experienced one yet in my Focus, now granted I'm doing 200mph, more like 120ish :P but still. The damage, and contact physics are nice, if you just roll up and slam someone in the bumper you pay for it (Forza this was the case as well, and I know in GT5 you can slam into someone at 150 and it just slows you for a second there is no real penalty for it that I can recall)

As I mentioned in another post this is really, really important. Well said, after I got it setup the way I liked I started to like the game a lot more.

Thanks for the honest review, pretty much what I figured after reading all the good and bad reviews out there. Its nice to see a different attitude for a change.

Well I have some practice in that department with GT5, that used to happen a lot before the first patch and Im sure this will be patched too.

Wait, you can turn that guy off??

If you end up sideways in the grass at a high-ish speed you'll likely go for a few rolls and it'll be the end of that race for you. I've only rolled once or twice, but I've been in several "light" crashes that definitely made it pointless to continue the race. It's a welcome change.

They also have that feature where the game monitors your track mastery. Big fun.

^ This.. Another amazing feature, it makes you want to drive spot on, not just take short cuts etc, also you get bonus money/xp for driving cleanly, very cool. Don't just ram your way to the front and you get bonuses.

I've rolled once, but it was in an invitational, can't remember the car..

Yes, weasel.

I have to say, the moment that I discovered that in the sound menu was one of the happiest of my life. I was actually trying to tune a car and the music said "dream" for the 25th time...my wife looked at me like she was going to claw my eyes out. I was hoping you could turn it off. There option for Vaugh is called "voice" I think. The music is "music". You can go High, Medium, Low, or blessedly Off.

You are my hero.

The 360 version is not native 1080p, but rather upscaled from 720p. Just like almost every single 360 game except for the handful with real 1080p support, and yes there are really only as many as you could count on your fingers.

Gotcha.. It's all good my friend! I was unaware. Thanks for pointing that out.

A very good and entertaining review. I've got to play with my DS3 settings to get rid of the "floatiness" as someone put it. Thanks again!

Thanks! You may want to use the settings that BeMoto listed with sensitivity to 10% and deadzone to 0 that may help with the floatiness.

I am also only using ABS as my aid, fyi.
