Ps3 power/heat in bspec...

Does anyone happen to know if the ps3 is stressed the same in all camera views and/or in live timing view? I mean if the game is rendered in a smaller window then less power is needed?

In other words does it help if you leave it on for the 24 hour races, so that you stress the ps3 less?

Probably not much difference, ive noticed my fan kicks in every now and then, whether its playing the full game or just in server standby mode.

Just make sure its well ventilated.

My ps3 has been grinding Bspec races for weeks. Been off for about 6hrs 1day, otherwise flat out.
Doesnt get hot at all. Stand upright with plenty of venterlation around it.
As for power use.........no idea. lol.....i dont pay electric bill.:sly:

..well, all I asked if anyone knows for sure if it makes a difference in power consumption / stress, when using live timing view mode rather than the normal view because the ps3 then renders a small window than the whole screen..

I was crazy enough one night to crunch the numbers. :ill:

I see it one of two ways. It will either consume less power in the live view as there is less to constantly regen or, more than likely, it won't make a damn bit of difference.

This does seem like good logic but without testing no-one would know. I don't think anyone would bet against this however. :)

Ive just run some tests on my super analysing machine...

The results were disappointing.

there was a thread about this, someone measured the W it used in different screens. We used to have a "drivers select" screen, where the screen is pretty much all black, and that was the most energy efficient "mode" to run the b-spec race. Since they've taken that away, it'd be just the live monitor screen from now.

If it is any thiference is minimal. you wont notice that in your bill or something like that. you should be worried about the heat ( and it never gets to hot ) rather than what you are asking..

Cheers

Don't know about you, but those energy numbers are pretty conclusive the only worrying thing is heat which thankfully isn't a worry :)

Mine nearly never has a fan where I can feel it. I judge my PS3s heat by how hard the fun is chugging, like if I can barely feel it I suppose I'll give it a break. If I can feel it faintly vibrating or hear the fan (which is still quiet, god I love that technology!) I give it a break after my turn and tell my bro to GTFO.
But the b-spec has always seemed to cool my ps3 down after a hard a-spec session to a fan-not-noticeable stage. I think you're fine ;)

yes, i was referring to the amount of heat output from the system. I have my system lifted up on all 4 corners of the system (horizontal), giving the bottom surface of the system room the dissipate the heat.

I have tried running the game in a lower resolution and my PS3 does run much cooler... The system fan rarely revs up to an audible level.

To play in a lower resolution go to the main menu and select:

Settings -> Display Settings -> Video Output Settings

Select Manual Settings then uncheck all boxes except 480p (576P if PAL)

Select 16:9 if you have a widescreen and restart GT5.

It will look like crap, but your system will run cooler for those endurance races.

agreed. i've been doing the same as well, and the system is pretty quiet since.

I have a refurb'd 80GB PS3 and the fans get loud when I first load everything up, but after about 3 minutes they go back to normal levels.

(Refurb units are known have really loud fans - it was Sony's fix to the whole heat problem causing the YLOD that killed my original PS3)

bumping an older thread,

does anyone know if i can default Remote Race B-Spec on the Live Time Monitor mode? I'm running it all the time (almost 24/7 with the widget) so if I can decrease any stress it puts on the system that will be much appreciated

Oh man I think your over-thinking it. Its only a myth at this point that Live Time Monitor decreases stress, there is no actual proof.

Coming from someone who YLOD a PS3 already, good ventilation would be your best bet in preserving the life of your PS3 IMO.

there isn't a way as of now.

i guess you could say that i'm overthinking it...i used to own a fat and now a slim so i'm actually not worried about heat dissipation/overheating...I'm more concerned about the GT5 game disc spinning 24/7 which will wear out the blu-ray lens a lot faster.

Well...

I took some measurements when running b-spec on my ps3 slim. My conclusion was that the ps3 consumed ~10 % less power when in live time screen and the view was set to track side cameras.

Also in full screen the track side camera view averaged the lowest consumption. The chase cam view consumed the most. There wasn't that much difference between the cockpit and the bumper cam views (in X2010 at least).

In short, the chase cam view in full screen took a more or less constant 86-87 W and the track side cam view in live time screen took 75-81 W depending on the amount of cars that were in the shot. Based on this, the latter option is my choice when grinding b-spec endurances from now on. 💡

Not that I don't believe you but how can one accurately measure PS3 power consumption. If you have some data a thread to confirm this theory would be a good idea too.

I have a kill-a-watt meter that I use for measuring my aquarium equipment. I'm guessing he is using something like that.

i think he/she's probably using a power meter

It's a he. :) And yes, a power meter is what I'm using. It should give fairly accurate readings since when it was tested a while back, it gave pretty much the same readings as a calibrated power meter that you can loan from the local electric company.

In theory there is no need for the disc to spin. Everything remote racing needs could be loaded onto the HD. I know I'd be willing to give up a couple gigs of space for that.
