I need some good suggestions for splitscreen/co-op titles for PS3.

My mate does not like racing games (So no GT5P, Shift, Grid etc.)

I do not like fighting games (No Tekken, streetfighter or similar)

Neither of us like football or sports games, so no FIFA or PES (Or Madden or that matter)

So it leaves us with First person shooters, strategy games, adventure game etc. We want something that has a little bit of depth and customisation to it.

Games we currently have and have played the hell out of already:

Resident Evil 5
Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires
COD MW2 and WAW (The offline gameplay is really poor due to the short campaign and the absence of AI bots - seriously why would anyone want to play 1vs1 in MW2? Bored of Nazi zombies too.)
Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2

His Xbox 360 got the RROD. He bought a PS3 and now we realise that the multiplayer games are severaly limited in terms of splitscreen on both consoles. In the past we've had the gamecube to use, Phantasy star online, SSB:Melee (Brawl is rubbish), Bomberman, Mariokart etc. There was always a wealth of choice. He has a Wii, but it is nowhere near as good as the GC was for games. Plus he sold Mariokart Wii, the only racing game he would play and therefore the only one I used to win at everytime... :ouch:

But this gen, the consoles are focusing on single player and online, nobody gives a monkeys about splitscreen anymore, which is sad :(

Any suggestions?

Even when your friend said he doesn't like racing games, you need to check out MotorStorm Pacific Rift, that game is bloody fantastic in splitscreen and you can make the AI pretty easy for racing noobs (you can also change the vehicle classes, so that you and your mate have Monster Trucks and the AI only Quads for example).

I was going to get Grid and shift and sort of build him up to GT5 when it comes out. But he downright refuses to play racing games, for the same reason I refuse to play fighting games that aren't button bash friendly. He would lose  My many years of experience of playing GT make sure of that.

Like I said, try it out, the game is so different compared to all the other games you listed, just alone because of it's off-road Arcade style. I had incredible races with friends who can't even take the first corner on Fuji in Prologue. :D

There's a demo in the Store which has splitscreen, try it out (with him) before you say no.

By refusing to play racing games your mate is missing out on some of the best games ever made, and will surfely miss out on one of the greatest experiences ever when GT5 comes out. I used to love fighting games, but since owning a PS3 only Virtua Fighter 5 has kept me playing. The Tekken games on PS2 were excellent, but on PS3 Tekken 6 sucks.

I agree, this actuallly really gets no my nerves. Modern game companies seem to think you only ever play with friends when your both at your own homes...which is wrong.

I can't really think of many splitscreen games, ModNation Racers is pretty good and similar to Mario Kart in many aspects and easy to get the hang of quickly. Plus you can go online whilst being splitscreen which is a nice option to have. I can't really think of anything else, apparently Terminator Salvation has co-op but when I rented it I didn't bother seeming it wasn't that good...currently I'm renting Vancouver Olympics 2010 and that's pretty fun splitscreen but you said no sports games...I really don't know what to suggest. :ouch:

EDIT: LittleBigPlanet is good splitscreen (if you can call it that) but that's worth a go. Rainbow Six Vega's 2 is not too bad either, it's a good couple of hours before you get bored of that, and it allows you to personalize your guys with weapons and armour IIRC.

If you check the link J-Pap was nice enough to post, you'll see there are over 75 games with offline co-op modes, many of which also have split screen, like;

  • Lost Planet 2
  • Borderlands
  • RAGE
  • Call of Duty: World at War
  • Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
  • Resistance 2
  • Resistance: Fall of Man
  • Resident Evil 5
  • Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2
  • Rainbow Six Vegas 2
  • Rainbow Six: Vegas
  • Kane and Lynch 2: Dog Days
  • Kane & Lynch: Dead Men
  • Army of Two: The 40th Day
  • Army Of Two
  • Conflict: Denied Ops
  • Unreal Tournament 3
  • Damnation
  • Terminator: Salvation
  • Destroy All Humans: Path of the Furon
  • G.I. Joe The Rise of Cobra
  • Hellboy: The Science of Evil
  • Transformers: War for Cybertron
  • The Lord of the Rings: War in the North
  • Lord of the Rings: Conquest
  • Dynasty Warriors 6: Empires
  • Dynasty Warriors 6
  • Dynasty Warriors: Gundam 2
  • Haze
  • Time Crisis 4

And these are just some of the shooters. Just about all the music games offer split screen, as well as most of the LEGO games. They don't even bother listing all the multi-player and split screen racing games of which there are many. Like:

  • ModNation Racers
  • Blur
  • Split Second
  • MotorStorm Pacific Rift
  • Grid
  • Sonic & Sega All Stars Racing
  • GT5P
  • Wipeout HD
  • Juiced 2
  • Most NFS games
And I'm sure many others.

So if you take the time to actually check, you'll see there are a lot more split screen and offline multi-player games than you may have realized.
