Of course I dont have a pracitcal view of cars. I'm a car enthusiast. I'll leave the practicality to the soccer moms and stay-at-home dads.
Give me a break!
The Ford Focus has had more recalls than any other car ever sold in North America. Facts are facts, and I dont like the sounds of that one.
The Focus hasn't been re-called at all (seven times in four years) when compared to the superstar Explorer. The Explorer, since 1991, has been recalled 29 times (yes, 29). Taking a look at some of the recalls:
1991-94: On cars sold or registered in specified southern California counties, studs that attach master cylinder to power brake booster assembly can develop stress corrosion cracking after extended period; fractures could cause separation of master cylinder when brakes are applied.
1995: Brake tubes in some models were misrouted, resulting in excessive stopping distance.
1996: Certification label shows incorrect rear tire inflation pressure.
1997-98: Certain off-lease vehicles, Canadian in origin but sold in the U.S., have daytime running lights that do not meet U.S. specifications.
2000: Side airbags could deploy if ignition key is in "run" position and seatbelt webbing is extracted from locked retractor with jerking motion.
Now seriously. Is Ford just that stupid? I don't like to pick on American cars unless there's a reason, and I find 29 recalls to be a major reason. This is my favourite:
2000-01: Hood striker could fracture causing the hood could fly open while the vehicle is being driven.
Well, wonderful! You could be driving along one day in your two-year-old Explorer and
BANG! Your hood striker fractures and you can't see and you head-on a tree.
Anyway, I'm off the point. Still, the Focus takes a backseat in crappy craftsmanship to the king of crappy craftsmanship, the Ford Explorer.
I've heard nothing but good things about the Civic. I still wouldnt buy one because I like pure performance, over the practicality, build quality and reliability the Civic offers. All of which it far exceeds the Focus at.
Focus repair costs are cheap. $130 for shocks and struts, for instance, to the Civic Si's $725. Since 1990, the Civic in its many forms has been re-called six times to the Focus's seven since 2000. Recalls, of course, don't dictate reliability, especially with a Ford product. Explorers, in their fit of recalls, are still extremely reliable after about 12 years. F-series pickups, too. In the end, cars today simply
are reliable. Reliability should no longer be a consideration for car buying - it's basically the same for most cars. Some cars - the Ford Escape, for instance - are cheaply built, but certainly not unreliable.
Oh, and another thing. The last time I checked (over a year ago) the Ford Focus was #5 on the North American Lemon list. The Mercury Cougar being #1 for 4 years straight. Go FoMoCo!!!
