If you turn off your computer, will your server crash? And if you get too many people to your website, will it slow down? (I'm planning on building a fairly large site:P )

Uhh.... Microsofts Personal Web Server? If yoru going to use hosting at all on your machine, atleast get a dsl connection and Apache.. Not MS's old piece of junk..

Yes, a server has to be running non stop.

Yes, the more people, the more information being received and sent, hence more work for the box.

Dude don't serve if you are using MS's stuff, pick up a book about linux and learn to use apache also and you will be set, let alone not needing to reboot everyday

Me too.

Maybe a few years down the track when I got some dough.
We did have a whole heap of old 266's, but I didn't realize you could use them as servers. So we pulled them apart and built a super 266 and gave it to a friend. :irked:

I hate it when that happens.

My dad had an old Valiant that he was going to swap the engine from another Valiant, he didn't have enough time to do it and eventually sold everything, only for me to grow an interest in engineering you could call it, only a year after he sold it.

I could've helped transplant the engine and whatnot, it would have been facinating.

Oh and Meme, before you even start, I seriously suggest getting books out of the library, reading around the net, do anything, just make sure you know what you're on about!

Oh my God. I usually try to be quite tolerant when someone asks a silly question, but really.

Firstly: Do any programs continue to run when the computer is powered off?

Secondly: Personal Web Server creates load on your machine, just like any other application, so the busier your site, the slower your machine will go.

Finally, PWS is rubbish. If you want to get up and running quickly and don't know anything, Internet Information Server is a reasonable product these days. However, Linux/Apache is the better way to go because it's more stable and more economical in terms of hardware requirements. It can be tricky to set up just right though.

Ummm, how can you claim this when you are asking questions like the ones at the top of this thread? I mean, be serious. What's the point of reading a book if absolutely none of it makes it into your head? I don't mean to be obnoxious, meme, but it's pretty hard to get past this.

I'm beginning to regret starting this thread, Please close this thread. Everybody seems to be 'yelling' at me :banghead:

We're not yelling, we're just telling you to read up so you don't come in here and make a dick of yourself, and then get yelled at.

I never saw that thread, but that quote is enough to sum it up for me.

I think the whole idea of using PWS has been shot down already. But just to add another nail to the coffin, it also has a limit on how many concurrent connection you can have too. Here's a great link for getting your Apache+modules up and running in a hurry: http://www.apachetoolbox.com/ If you still have questions after that, feel free to PM me.
