Question about the G27 (sound)

I have read a bit about the G27 and I have seen some video's on youtube, and I remember that in a review video from "insidesimracingtv" that there was quite a horrible cluncking sound coming from the wheel occationally. As I have read this is mainly, or only due to the FFB.

Now for me the most important feature of a wheel is not the FFB, I am currently using a logitech driving force pro, and I never use the FFB as I find it uncomfortable.

My question to the G27 owners is then if you recognize this clunking sound from the wheel, does it appear when the FFB is NOT in use?

Reason I ask is that if I get a G27 then I will not use the FFB anyway so I just care about it being as silent as possible, the sound is as i assume many players know quite hefty with the Driving force pro, when turning.

There is little noise when running normally ...
But when driving on a big vibrating like London for example, there may be a big noise, but we quickly forget ...

I hope I have answered your question.

if your not buying for the ffb then get a chaeper wheel, once your imersed in a game any sound the wheel makes is all but forgotten

I'm pretty sure the G27 will be completely silent without FFB turned on. The rattle sound is pretty horrible but on insidesimracing's forum it was mentioned that lowering FFB made it rattle less. The rattle is the result of feedback from vibrations (i.e. rallying) so without feedback that noise should not be there.

Other than that the wheel is silent.

Personally I like the sound of the clunking because if you were to go over a chicane then you would hear it and feel it. I recently got a replacement for my G25 which was a G27 and the clutch DOES work and it is very quiet and the clunking is also quiet.

If the g27 is quieter, why do more people like the G25? I'm curious, because I thought I have read that people prefer the G25 over the G27.

They're very, VERY similar. But I can't think of a single thing that I actually prefer about the G25 other than the placement of the buttons on the wheel. The lack of the sequential shifter doesn't bother me because I either use the H-Pattern or paddle shift. And the improved feel of the shifter and less notchy FFB makes up for it.

If I drive over a curb, I want to feel it in the wheel. I don't need to hear the wheel going "CLUNK CLUNK CLUNK". Besides, that's what I have a buttkicker for. :sly:

I'm sure for most people the reason for that is GT5P. No sequential on the G27 but also the paddle shifters do not work in GT5P. Other than that I don't really know why someone would go G25 over the G27 because from what I have read the G27 has an extremely better h shifter and in every other category it is at least slightly better than the G25.

I remember when I first heard the noise and I went online to search if it was normal thinking that my G27 must have been broken. I found that was normal and actually, many people were not bothered by it!

Of course, this is one of those subjective categories where everyone will have to decide whether it bothers them or not but for me it is unacceptable. Other than that noise the wheel is completely silent so I feel as though it is a shame that it clunks. Really lets the wheel down :(

It rarely 'clunks' here. Must have something to do with the helical gears in the G27

FWIW, I've had my G27 for several months and have NEVER heard it 'clunk'. At least, not what I would consider a 'clunk'. :dopey: By comparison the G25 sounded like one of these:

And yes I'm exaggerating. Obviously. But I just mean to say the G27 is MUCH quieter.

Hijacking this thread for a while.

Something I don't understand is how some websites and even shops are able to sell the G27 much cheaper than the original Logitech prise.

Today I went to a pc store to ask about this and he said that it could be an imitation. He also told me that he had a Chinese visitor once whom asked if he was interested in selling his (Chinese) Logitech stuff for a much lower price. The pc store owner couldn't see a difference between his official Logitech stuff and the Logitech stuff the Chinese had with him

€ 249 for a G27 is fishy.

They went up in price as well due to the dollar getting stronger. Used to be €225 a month ago.
They had a discount day in their store, but Logitech didn't allow them to sell them that cheap anymore.
And the price on the Logitech website is much higher than retail price. The G25 was still priced the same when it went out of production as that it was priced when it launched.

But you still have the FFB activated when it makes the "clunking" sound yes ?

So far the replies have made me optimistic, so it seems I might be in for a very silent wheel without the FFB :)

Still have not made any definitive decission to buy one but I am thinking about it.

So these are the prices of G27's in stock before Logitech made them more expensive?

Only the 3 most expensive webshops in that list have a price higher than the logitech price.
Here is a store that sells it for €279

Stores buy a larger quantity and have to pay way less. Then they sell it for as much as they like to make a profit. Selling lots of them cheap for a smaller profit can be beneficial, because people will get to know your shop and come back for other stuff aswell.

FYI for the price, I do not know about other regions but here in Canada the MSRP on Logitech's site is pretty high. The only places that charge MSRP on Logitech devices are the big stores like Best Buy, Staples, etc. Every other store charges less than MSRP.

Does the G25 produce the same CLUNK sound as the G27?
From what I have read the G25 does not produce that noise but overall it is much louder than the G27.

Well I have never used the G25, my wheel experience is DFGT, G27, GT3RS and Turbo S so I have not used a really loud wheel yet. I guess that's why the noise bothers me so much, my DFGT made a knocking noise when trying to catch a slide but other than that it was not too loud.

The G27 sound is more a rattle than a clunk, I get it a lot while rallying. When driving it happens often enough to be annoying, guess it's because I drive like a jerk

Yeah the sound is when the FFB is enabled.
