Getting fairly close to joining iRacing (GTSport is too too much a gong show), first thing I've done is read the sporting code, and I have some questions;

6.8.2.1.1. On road courses, if a local yellow flag is displayed, passing is prohibited until the flag is no longer displayed or is replaced by a green flag.
1. Does not say you have to slow down... So hammer down, just no passing, and, obviously if blind crest/corner ease up/slow... or ??

6.8.2.1.3. In the event of a full-course caution, a yellow flag will be displayed at start/finish and all corner stations. Race Control will freeze the running order and send the pace car out to pick up the race leader. Drivers must comply with instructions from Race Control regarding where to line up behind the pace car.
2. Who is race control?
3. Is this an automated in game function?
4. Instructions from race control… audible, text on screen?

6.9. Pitting Procedures
5. “We” are responsible for driving on pit road, maintaining speed, avoiding others and getting the car fully in the box?
6. Can we pit long/short/far to the outside limits?
7. In the game, how real/hard is this?
8. Can accidents occur in the pits?
9. Do we get an indication of “safe to go” or, “hold up” if another car is coming?
10. From videos, looks like I would need to have a mouse in action while driving to set up fuel/tires when coming to the pits?

I'll likely have a lot more questions as I read more (career path) and watch some tutorial videos.

First is, If I simply want to practice/learn a track... guessing I will have to have bought the track and car...

TIA

edit to add;
I have started to read "A Beginners Guide to the Art of (i)Racing"...
And the first thing it said to do was read the sporting code...
So, I'm off to finish reading A Beginners Guide to the Art of (i)Racing

Hello @cleanLX

I moved to iracing only a couple of months ago. Have had about 50 races in the mazda cup only. I'll try to answer some questions while on my break.

. Who is race control?
3. Is this an automated in game function?
4. Instructions from race control… audible, text on screen?

Race control is the automated system for controlling the race, penalties, incidents , flags etc. I've read that in some higher level races its done by rl stewards. You get on screen text or display to show penalties, incidents, etc. I've used crew chief since start it gives audible notifications for them while still having the text. Unsure about the default settings. Crew chief is your own pit crew chief and spotter. Great addition to racing. You can use voice commands to control pit stops, get updates on you own and others lap times and more. If get iracing get crew chief.

The mazda cup races doesn't require pit stops. But from my experience cars ghost through each other while in the pits. Getting into the pit box is the same as rl you've to stop on your mark, one of the pit crew hold a marker for your stopping position. There is a pit lane speed limit with penalties for breaking it and crossing the pit exit line. You can turn on a pit line limiter in settings but you have to slow before entering. You can use the relative blackbox hud display to tell you when it's best to join track.

I don't use a mouse when racing i have it turned off in settings crew chief does a lot and you can also key bind controls to the buttons on your wheel. I keep my key board beside but never used it during race.

Iracing has so much stuff to go through settings, info, etc. It's very realistic damage is always on apart from free practice. Best way to explain it is iracing is to gtsport as gtsport is to need for speed. The draw backs is the price and ui. I haven't had the chance yet to take it as serious as I would like but would never go back to gt. The racing is a lot cleaner although you still have the odd reckless driver. I've been told the racing becomes cleaner in the higher licence class races. So far it's be good in match making have had some intense close clean raced. Hope this helps. You can always try the 3 month offer just before a season starts. My plan when i finish studying is to do a full mazda season then move to the ferrari serie and skippy. This will cost around £120 approximately but i'm happy to pay it after the racing I've had.

race control is automated, I have never seen a full course caution in iracing except on ovals, and when pitting you can make contact with other cars on pit road but ghost thru other cars in the pit box. If you don't stop in your box it will say to far forward or to far back. You will have to start in rookies till you gain a higher license and pit stops are not required in rookies. You can set everything up with buttons on your wheel, a button box, or the default buttons on a standard keyboard for fuel, tires, and adjustments you want to make during a pitstop. Also can adjust brake bias and other things that may be driver adjustable in the real car while on track. It is like anything you have no control over, some races may be crash fest and some may be the best experience ever. With the irating and safety ratings it does tend to weed out the idiots after a while as you move up in ratings as you are paired with similar irating drivers in official races.

Imagine thinking GTS is too big of a gong show, so you opt into a bigger gong show, classic move

For me gtsport had to many dirty drivers. Iracing doesn't seem to have as many. The racing I've had in iracing is a lot better than gtsport. I wouldn't say it's a bigger 'gong show'. It's tough, expensive with less content than gtsport and it is confusing sometimes but it provides better quality racing.

I would say it is, you're projecting one portion of GTS to all, when that's not reality. Sure lower classes of GTS have pretty bad drivers that really don't care. But then again I've seen the same with iRacing. I've even seen drivers have one account of higher ranking and one of lower just so they can drive dirty in iRacing. The fact that you have a more structured rule set and yet players still finding ways to circumvent them to do stupid stuff on a subscribe to play system is bonkers.

You could be right that i'm projecting one portion of gts to all. I'm only interested in the quality of racing and racers. The dirty drivers I mention aren't those in the lower levels. I reached A S in gtsport and found those drivers to be more dirty than the say B A level drivers. I even seen one guy in the live finals of gts who has constantly pushed people on hairpins and chicanes during the fia championships and daily races. My experience is limited in iracing, only having around 75 ish races. Yet I have had better quality of racing and tougher competition. I have met some 'crazies' but its been rare. It serves the purpose of filling my desire to race as close as possible to rl as I can afford, gts couldn't provide that for me. Anyhow happy racing :gtpflag:

1. Most completely ignore the yellow flag system, as there is no penalty I have seen to pass under local yellows.
2. race control is an automated system.
3. No, you maintain complete control of your vehicle from the moment you hit drive.
4. Text, on screen, with audio ques from your spotter.
5. Yes, there is no AI intervention with your vehicle.
6. You can pit long or short, but you need to be inside the box, and your pit time is slower.
7. It is very hard until you learn the pit road system.
8. Depends on the series as far as I know.
9. The lollipop will go when it should be safe to go.
10. Yes.

There is no comparison between iRacing and GTS. GTS is an arcade game that wants to be a simulator. You're going to find dirty and crappy drivers no matter what racing game you play.

6.9. Pitting Procedures
5. “We” are responsible for driving on pit road, maintaining speed, avoiding others and getting the car fully in the box?
Correct. It is easier than you think

6. Can we pit long/short/far to the outside limits?
Not sure what you mean by this. You have a bit pox, you drive to it.

7. In the game, how real/hard is this?
Once in pit lane ghosting will occur. Getting in and out is easier than you think

8. Can accidents occur in the pits?
While entering the pits yes. It rarely happens

9. Do we get an indication of “safe to go” or, “hold up” if another car is coming?
No need as you ghost going out of pits.

10. From videos, looks like I would need to have a mouse in action while driving to set up fuel/tires when coming to the pits?
Can be done with mouse or button box or you can download programs like IRpitcrew that will do everything for you

What's the difference between this and crew chief?

Oh and could you provide a link for IRpitcrew. Googled it quickly couldn't find it. Haven't checked the iracing forum yet.

If I did this right, this will take you direct to the download.

If I did it wrong, you can find the down load at the bottom of the first post here:

IRpitcrew will do everything for you. You don't have to mess with anything. Once it's running, it will tell iRacing how much fuel to put in the car. There are options you can check (ex: tires) and it will do that automatically for you as well.

I've only used crew chief for the spotting and splits, not for fuel or tires so I cannot help you with that.

The other one you should look at is Joel Real Timing. It's tricky to get set up because the options are almost limitless.

I've not checked in for some time, thanks for all the replies.

My pleasure.

You can look me up on iRacing, my name there is Erik Luke2 and/or you can find me on Discord Erik Luke #4520 if you need help with anything. I'll be more than happy to jump in a session with you and show you the ins and outs.
