R3 tires turns this game into Arcade mode

Finally took some time and messed around with different tires. Wow, what a difference, changes the race altogether.

I was racing the Alpine A110 1600S '73 on the short, constant curvy .8mile Autumn Mini Ring course and was all over the place trying to win an A class race. Switch from N1 to R3 tires and won easily with it almost impossible for the car to spin out or get sideways.

Street cars are on rails using R tires and makes the game tons easier. Too easy and unrealistic in most cases.

It's almost as though putting on R3 tires is a driving aid on the non-race cars.

Anyway, now that I've messed with changing tires on tons of cars, how do I get the cars to go back to Default tires that they are suppose to come with?

Racecars are usually equiped by default with R1
Fast street cars S3

I did not change any tyre choice myself. So if you want the default tyre choice of a car, just let me know. I almost have them all ;)

So by the replies, once changed, there is no way to know exactly what tires came on the car? Perhaps there is a data base list somewhere of full car specs with tires?

If the car is able, you could try going to a snow or dirt track so it automatically changes to snow & dirt tires. Then just go back to a tarmac track.

Haven't done this myself but its worth a try.

Good thinking but I just tried this and it does not work. If you do your suggestion the game will always pick S3 tires even if I know the car came with N1.

Any other ideas out there?

I agree that R3 tires (or any R tires for that matter) are overkill for road cars, but some supercars are almost undrivable with S tires (Enzo anyone?). That said, I only use R tires if I'm driving race car. Most of the time I use S1-S3, and for dinky Kei cars and city cars I use N1-N3.

This. The game resets the tire selection to default when taking it off the favorites list.

Nope, doesn't work. Just like changing to dirt track and back, it changes all the cars to S3 tires, not the proper Default tires the car is suppose to have.

GTPSP is at its most fun when you're in a relatively low powered road car running N tyres. (And of course everything turned off and Pro physics). The R3 tyres make it look like the replay is being played in Fast Forward.

It's a shame that the AI do not run the same tyres as you, even if you force them to use the same car.

I've seen it change back to R1 for some of the race cars. :) Not too sure about the low-powered cars though.

Really? I was under the impression that the AI always uses the same tyres as you do, because once you've entered a race you can't change your tyres anymore.

Not directly, but you can "see" what tyres they use from the way they behave on track. And from my experience, they always use the same tyres as we do.

They don't. Put N1 tyres on a Nissan Silvia or something, and it's impossible to corner at the same speed as the AI. You get left for dead off the line too.

I think if you don't "Use single manufacturer" it might pick your opponents based on your car/tyre combination, but they won't be on N1s. And even if you choose "Use single manufacturer", the AI will not run N1 tyres.

They might use your choice of tyre if it's more grippy than their default, but I don't think they go any lower than their default tyre.

Hmmm. Maybe it's the effect of the dreaded rubberband effect you're talking about? I've done many races on the 'Ring with many cars and various tyre combinations, and we (me and the AI) always have similar cornering speeds, given that we are close together (when the gap gets too big RBE kicks in and the AI have superhuman powers). The dash off the line into the first corner is always pretty close as well.

I haven't tried turning off the Same Manufacturers option though. Will have to check on that one.

Could it possibly be the same trick they used in GT5P, where the AI always uses standard physics, regardless of whether you are using pro?

You can use what ever you want if it makes the game easier for you. But here's what I always use re tyres for time attacks/races...

(Pro Physics and no assists, only t/c 1-3 on rwd cars if real car has it, but also turn it off for fun)...

TYRES:
ALL road cars (stock performance tyres) - S1
Tuned cars (road legal semi-slicks) - R1
Race cars (full slicks) - R3

As shown I always use S1 on all road cars, becuase S2 and even the default S3 produce far too quick lap times compared to real life, and too much grip.

Yes cars like the TVR's (Enzos etc) are a handfull with S1's, but I've driven a Tamora with no T/C in real life I can assure you they are a real handfull with serious wheelspin in the first 3 gears, you just can't put your foot flat down on a 2nd gear corner without being very brave and struggling to control it. If the game is a sim then shouldn't it be like that with S1 tyres? (as opposed to dead grippy R3 tyres)

As said, R3 tyres on the road cars are the best form of assists, they just grip and grip with corning and braking, and should be avoided if you want to drive the game and its road cars as a sim (for a handheld). No road car ever run full slicks, and I personally think PD shouldn't give people the R3 option, on PSP or PS3.:) (awaits being shot down.)

Road cars can run full slicks, on a track. I've seen it done many times. But I do agree with you that for the most realism you should use an appropriate tire and not just put R3s on everything.
