Rare paint chips

I did an experiment the last three weeks to see how getting of rare paint chips are distributed, receiving 5 rare paint chips every day in one second account and sending them to another second account.

So I ended up with 105 rare paintchips, matte and chrom you get every 30 cars.

However the number of paintchips I got greatly differ from what I expected.

For example I have received 14 matte pink chips, 14 matte light blue but not a single matte brown chip.

I always thought you have a equal chance of getting a rare paint chip when you acquire 30 cars, but this experiment tells me that's not the case.

Do you guys have any guesses or ideas why PD would chose to don't give them a equal chance?

Oh by the way, I don't want that this thread is made into a duping is bad or good thread, I also don't want to explain how I managed to receive 5 rare paint chips in one account per day and NO ONE should explain that here. Do that per PM if there is a need for that, not here please.

Because matte brown is sooooo cool

For the same reason it takes many tries to get the car you want from a ticket, its just random. This concept sucks IMO, but its nothing new. I remember first seeing it in GT3 when after a championship it gave you a random prize car out of I think 4 choices. I remember having to reset until I got a FGT. :grumpy:

There are no "rare" paint chips. All of the Matte paints have the same chance of falling on your 30th car. Basically, it's like saying you rolled a 6-sided dice 20 times and didn't roll a one, so the one must be rare. Nope, not rare, just luck of the draw.

Nope that's not quite the same, because when you roll a dice not biasing the roll in any way you end up with aproximately the same amount of the numbers which show up. (is that understandable? As I said before I'm not a native speaker). If you throw a dice 120 times you would end up with all the numbers showing up about 20 times, more or less. But if one number wouldn't show up after 120 tries either your throw or the dice would be biased in some way.

That's what made me think that the chances to get one matte paint chip are not equal.

I disagree, in theory what you say is true, but when rolling dice luck plays a part in it also, just like in craps, and just like the paint system in this game.

Well this can lead into a discussion if there is something like luck, we had one about that in my statisics lecture related to the same example. However when the example size grows (in this case 105) luck plays only a very minor roll, if there is something like luck.

Mh, maybe I should just keep this experiment running for another one or two weeks and see what happens, but until know I think PD somehow biased the rare paint chip system.

*Is* there a matte brown paint chip? o_O ?

Don't think I've ever seen one. I can't imagine it's all that popular, because it would make your car look like... well.. you know. :yuck:

Good luck with your experiment and I hope you share your results. As I like to read threads as such. Let me also point out that the sticked thread on this form says its random. https://www.gtplanet.net/forum/showthread.php?t=136609
So if you discover something that no one else knows you will prove EVERYBODY wrong.

Well according to some post here there is one. I've looked it up in the photo mode forum and some cars look quite good with matte brown, but some really look like ... ähm not so good.

The way that PD makes anything work in this game is beyond me. I don't understand how they came up with their decisions but I guess we just have to sit back and try and get "lucky" and hope for a good draw on the paint chip.

Yes, there is a matte brown chip. It's pretty cool--used it on a Murcielago SuperVeloce. Makes the car look coffee-colored. Looks better than one might think.

That's crazy to hear that it could actually make it look decent, and I use that term loosely!

LOL I was thinking the same thing.
I once used what I thought was a yellowish gold paint chip, and looked fine on the GT Auto car swatch. Thought it would be vibrant golden. Think it was metallic. But when I painted the car... it was very dull, and looked like it came out of a nappy.

I'm partial to *any* light green or light pink paints myself. And light pale muted blues, and SOFT reds, and orange-leaning yellows. And just pastel colours in general. (note: I'm female, this is all okay!!)

And I never get many, so they SEEM less common to ME. Coincidence?
Maybe it's because I use the ones I do get?

And I don't like bright primary colors, but I seem to have tons. I have tons of white & black paint chips saved up. Probably because I NEVER USE THEM.

So I think what would actually make a paint chip "more rare" is not so much your chances of RECEIVING ONE, but the chances you will use them up by painting a car with them.

If I remember my maths correctly it should take ~ 10000 samples to see if something is random with an equal chance.

But I do welcome the update of the UCD. Got some pretty amazing neon green from an NSX :-)
