Over in the GT2 forum the Rate a Car thread is sorta dying but it's a good idea so maybe we can continue it here only rating any car you wish... hell, rate a minivan if ya want!

I'm going to have to buy a new car very soon. My 91 Sentra died today, again. So after work today I get to **** with that piece of s*** again.

So can anybody start off by rating a car suitable for a family of three that won't bore me to tears? :(

And I already have an SUV...

In the past few months, I've owned/driven several in this category - the best would be my new Audi A4, though I only had to pay a few hundred dollars for it. Plainly, it's a great bet...

...some time before that, I had a Nissan Altima 3.5SE - great car in all regards. Reliability isn't as good as the Camry, but it's a lot more fun, which was, in the end, the deciding factor for me.

My brother has got a Mazda Millenia S - very, very nice vehicle. A bit larger than your '91 Sentra. Still the best Japanese car in that segment (much better than the Avalon/Diamante).

The last vehicle I recommend is a BMW M5....

...don't look at me like that. :P

family of 3...hmmm...

a Z06 vette. just jam the kid in the boot. he wont scream for long - the air will run out after a few minutes.

We had some neighbours at our bach that had four children

6 people
5 seater

So they stuck a kid in the boot, luckily they only had to drive for an hour.

They ended up getting a big 4wd 7 seater, perfect.

I would sugest maybe waiting if you can, and getting the new 6 when it come out here. Awsome, high-quality vehicle, and loads of options. 218HP would fit you quite well...

If you can't wait, find a Millenia S, they are fast and very, very nice. Ride is good, they are fast(my dad took me up to 126mph in 1 on a diagnosis drive, it just got going, no loud noise or anything, it was like 70 to 126 before you know it). The S is only an auto though, but that is good actually, it goes fast anyway, and anyone can drive an auto. It's also RWD.

Problems:hard to do maintainence on, takes a lot of time to do simple stuff, but they don't have any mechanical problems.

Cool stuff:The Supercharger! One of the coolest sounds you can hear. It takes regular unleaded I believe, unlike the Premium guzzling turbo cars. They look great. Inside you get a ton of options, power everything. Leather is nice also. Very solid car too, you get a feeling like you are in a tank or armoured car, no flimsy body pannels or interior peices. Very ergonomic also, everything seems in the right place and easy to access. Lots of storage areas, and a big trunk.

Price: Well, if I were you I would try to find a '97-current used one, that should cost around 16K-18K, but you are getting a lot of car for that much.

If you are thinking about getting one, just tell me what you found and I'll tell you what to check for and stuff.

Wow, I appreciate the responses. Thanks.

Little story. I went to the Sentra after work and tried to jump it. After the cables were on I sat down and turned the key.

Nothing.

So I turned the key again, thinking I maybe missed a click or something.

Nothing.

Oh and the metal around the ignition burned my finger. This was really odd :odd: And then I looked up and saw smoke coming off of the battery terminal so I jumped out and ran to take it off. It was too hot to touch but we eventually got it off. The terminal wiring melted and the insulation on the jumper clamp also melted. Obviously this car is not starting today. My wife came and picked me up.

I've had electrical problems before in my old Jeep but it ran, I just had no air conditioning because I was unwilling to pay the 500-600 dollars I was quoted by two places, which cost me 120 just to find out.

So "very soon" has become "tomorrow". Yup. Pretty sure I'm buying a new car tomorrow. Only thing is I have no down payment and no trade in. I think I'm gonna donate the Sentra and write it off. This piece of **** is not worth another dime. (130,000 miles, leaks everything, air sucks and I need it here in hell)

I liked your suggestions. I especially like Audis. You will all laugh if I tell you what I'm probably going to buy. But I won't say until its a done deal.

I'll say this. It absolutely has to be new. And it has to be under 16k or so.

Can you guess?

Protege?

I think you've made a wise choice.

Naa I bet you are gonna get another Sentra.

Coopers are stupid. I'm not that conspicuous.

Beetles are okay but 2 doors. No good for a child seat.

Ahhhh!!! No no please not another sentra.

No sports cars, not this time :(

I bought a 2002 Hyundai Elantra.

My wife will drive it and I will finally get my Grand Cherokee back. :D

I'd be interested in your comments on the quality of it - an acquaintance of ours bought an Elantra wagon (they have a big dog and a two year old son that seems to be continually covered in some form of gooey food) specifically because they wanted a cheap new car they could destroy the interior of without guilt.

I had a pick through it and although it was a completely uninspiring thing to drive, I was quite surprised at how well constructed the thing was - and I drive a Subaru so I'm coming from a pretty high level here. Paint was a little bit orange-peely, but had good lustre and there was plenty of it, and the interior seemed pretty well screwed together (especially after the previous model, which seemed to be already inhabited by the Squeak family).

I was pretty impressed. Like you said, I, too, would characterize it as "uninspiring." But on my budget it was the best new car I could afford. The quality is right up there with Civics, Corolas, Sentras, etc...

The outside appearance is great. The front end lines are attractive and the projection headlamps are a nice touch. The paint is not cheap and the construction is solid. The inside is roomy and solid. The arm rest (my old Sentra didn't even have an arm rest  ) doesn't move when I lean my weight on it and inside is a versatile, two-layer compartment. The dash array is laid out nicely and includes a tachometer. Faux wood trim throughout the car adds a little touch of class. And the back seat actually has enough room for someone to sit back there even with my 6'2" frame in the front.

The motor is a 2.0 liter 16 valve 4 cylinder with adequate pick up even with the air on. And it's quiet.

It came with Michelins all around and driver and passenger airbags, side airbags, power everything and cruise control. The trunk is as big as I'll ever need it to be.

Most importantly I don't grimmace when I go in the garage and look at it. It's a nice looking car.

And you can't forget that warantee: 5 yrs 50k bumper to bumper, 10 yrs 100k powertrain, all included in the purchase price. One nice thing is that the first five years include roadside assisance: free tow to nearest dealer, free loaner car, $100 a night for hotel and food, and free delivery of your car when it's fixed.

All in all a very good purchase for just over 13k :)

I'll have to continue to rely on GT2 to drive my dream cars... :P

By the way, I'm not sure if anyone knows this, but Hyundai is no longer a company to laugh at - the sell more cars yearly than Mercedes or Mazda, and their new cars are well-done (though the ride on most of them is still rather harsh).

The only Hyundai I would stress staying away from is the Santa Fe. It's ugly, but other than that it's OKAY; the only problem is that foor about $2000 (with each package; I-4, 4WD I-4, V-6 and 4WD V-6) you can get the infinitely better looking Tribute.

I'm rather indifferent on the Elantra, though I must say I love the new Tiburon, especially in V-6. I'm anxiously awaiting the convertible, though it'll probably rattle more than the Solara and C70 combined.

I like the Elantra GT with the hatch.

I like that one too. It definitely looks more sporty, sorta like a rally car. The differences between my GLS and the GT are...

GT is smaller inside, has a spoiler, allow wheels, and leather. Other than that there's no difference. Even the engine is the same. 2.0 liter, 16 valve. The sedan also comes with a 1.6 liter but not mine.

I've heard good things about the Tiburon. I guess it's pretty quick.

And yes, the Santa Fe is ugly, as are most SUV's. But not as ugly as a Pontiac Aztec, which has got to be the ugliest vehicle in the history of automobiles!

This new Elantra is very quiet inside. It kinda amazes me. And it runs surprisingly smooth. You can hardly tell it's running.

Now that I have one I see them all over the place.

So how about rating some cars now?

Hyundai Elantra GLS: 70/100 (for what it is) Good quality, smooth, quiet ride, priced right.

Next car: Subaru Imprezza WRX.

if i was going on budget, i would definitely pick up a second hand Porsche 944, costs at around £11,000
Specs
0-60- 6seconds
Top speed 155mph
3.0
4cyl, 16 valve
means very reliable
And a great car to own and drool at.

Or extremely low budget, definitely a Mini cooper, fantastic cars, love every bit of it.
The old one that is, the new ones are alright but i don't think they have had quite the impact the old mini did when it came out.

On the Hyundai issue, I wonder how much it costs next to, say, a Pontiac Sunfire. I only ask because I drove a Hyundai in Ireland, and a Sunfire in PA/MD, and would take the Hyundai EVERY SINGLE TIME in a choice. The Pontiac was a POS!

Well, based on the looks of the Sunfire alone, I'd choose the Elantra.

Some of those Sunfires have body cladding that just ruins the whole look (as if it's a dignified look anyway).
