Real life gear ratio settings

Hello everyone. Wow, it's been a while since I last posted anything! I've gotten to the point where I've fettled with the game so much, I'd like to make it even more realistic by using real life gear ratios because some of the cars such as the Honda ITR or the new Ford GT seem to have the wrong ratios. I know I'm not the first to say something like this but I haven't run into any other threads that give me concrete answers. If this ends up being a copy thread or whatever, moderators, please lock it or notify me of a better thread to look at. In the mean time, here goes my question(s).

1. Is there any way to tune the ratios to match real life? I have tried and though I have been successful on a few occasions, I'm not sure if they are truly correct because of the autoset setting.

2. Concerning the autoset feature, what should I do about it when fiddling with the ratios? Should I set it all the way up to 25? Doing so seems to allow me to access the really low ratios but tends to spread the gears out too far for me to believe that is how the real vehicle's gears are spread. Any ideas?

If anyone has any knowledge to impart, please do so because I'm really dead set on realism and very sick of second guessing myself everytime I set the gears up. Thanks and hope to read some good advice in the future.

The Autoset only sets the possible setup ranges for the individual gears, it doesn't affect the actual ratios. If you have a gear with a ratio of 2.500 and a final of 3.000 it doesn't matter which Autoset value you're using. It's just that you can't get the same values with every Autoset. Find the one that gives you the ranges in which the real ratios fall.

That's just my small piece of advice.

Hmmm...that's pretty much what I've been doing and it really seems to be the only way. I just set up a MB SL55 stock with LSD, custom tranny, and Soft Sport tires. I ran it 3 laps on La Sarthe sans chicanes with a stock tranny. It ran smooth through the corners, seemed to have the right gears for most corners, and ran 206 mph down Mulsanne. Posted time: 3:47.472. I tried it again with the custom tranny set up to real world ratios and got slower acceleration, some slight mismatching of gear vs. corner and a higher top speed (209 mph). 3 laps resulted in a best time of 3:48.104. After another 5 laps and really getting used to the car, I was able to pull off a 3:46.966 which was due predominantly to a higher max speed on Mulsanne which gave me a near 2/3 second advantage by the braking zone at Mulsanne corner which was lost under acceleration from there to the Indy/Arnage corners. I'm disappointed. I've noticed this with a few vehicles. It seems PD messed with the gear ratios to make the cars overall faster than they are supposed to be in real life. We probably have Sony USA to thank for this....just the way we did in GT3 in which game speed was increased for American audiences who "prefer a higher sense of speed." :(

Think of the Auto Set as predetermined gear packages. Selecting another Auto Set would be the same as installing a different transmission. Selecting individual ratios would be the same as installing different gears in an existing transmission.

What I do to find a gear set:

Fiddle with the final drive and autoset until the ratios I want are in range (Autoset affects the individual gears differently depending on the final. Less final=more multiplication in each gear for a given autoset), then set the ratios, then set the final to where it should be; touching the autoset again means going back through it.

First Gear Ratio (:1) 2.61
Second Gear Ratio (:1) 1.71
Third Gear Ratio (:1) 1.23
Fourth Gear Rato (:1) 0.94
Fifth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.77
Sixth Gear Ratio (:1) 0.63
Final Drive Axle Ratio (:1) 3.36

Here's your ratios for the Ford GT.

Adjust the FDR, then find an autoset which gets you close, then adjust each gear.

If you type 'gear ratios Ford GT' into Google, that's what you get. Try it with other cars. :)

Thats exactly what I've been doing...Google is the greatest. I just set a 3:50.000 on La Sarthe with a stock Ruf CTR using real gear ratios. Thanks guys for reiterating my original assumptions about the issue. It seems I was on the right track originally. Case closed. Moderators you can delete this thread if you like.

if the gears were really set at RL shiftpoints, you'd be looking at a max speed of somewhere around the highest number on the speedo...85 on regular cars, 120 on performance.

I base the autoset on the final gear ratio and the power level of the vehicle. for example, a Kei class with a final around 5.0 would end up with an autoset of 10

I've been meaning to get a car and put in the ratios of my real car, to see if it'll work and to see what my top speed would be limited to by gearing :sly: If I do it and remember I'll tell you the verdict. (whether or not they were the same as real ratios)

The rev limit is also wrong for some cars. I had to do some other engine tuning to get around that, but then you add more power!
