Ok, heres the question for all the real road tuners.  You know who you are.
I just recently changed the waterpump in my 97z and I accidentally knocked off the timing chain for the twincam motor.  I put the chain on (first time ever on this car) and thought I had it timed according to the manual.
Upon cranking the motor, It idles kinda rough, lopes a little, and you must give constant throttle to keep any kind of an idle.  It runs halfway good when above 1500 rpm and when driving, no real power like before.
Keep in mind Ive added perf parts like underdrive pulley, headers and cold air intake.
Now if the timing were off a couple of teeth, or even one, would it feasibly cause these conditions on a computer controlled car.  There is no distributor or dis pacs for ignition.  It is direct fire ignition with fuel injection.
Sorry for the long post, just confirming me theory the timing is off just a touch.
Thanks for the input.  You real tuners, you should know the answer.  Im still learning this stuff and appreciate any help.
having to do it again

I`m not that great on these computer controlled cars but i think even one notch would make a big difference.I have installed timing belts on single cam comp.controlled cars and if you`re off one notch it won`t be close enough.
Someone help us out on this one.

It really doesnt matter now.  I am pretty sure on the timing thing.  Im going to take it apart this weekend and retime according to the book.  This time Im going to make darn sure that its right before I put back together.  If it wasnt such a pain to do, I wouldnt mind so much, but a lot has to be removed to get to the timing cover.  The lovely engineers at GM for ya.
Thanks.

I'll happily admit that I'm not a mechanic, but I've recently had performance mods to my car.

The Car's ECU/CPU had to re-programmed to take advantage of the new mods and to keep the idle smooth.  Is this what's missing?

Alfaman, my ecm and computer are not programmable.   There are many with my mods on the same engine that are running fine.  I know that my computer in the car should be able to compensate for most of the mods to my car, barring NOS, turbo, or supercharger.
I know its the timing, I did a check for vacuum leaks and nothing was found to be wrong.  I also checked every connector too.
Thanks for the info though.
BTW, what do you drive and what performance mods have you done to your ride??

Just curious.
Later.

Hi misnblu,

Great car, very impressed.  I've added a posting to your What do you Drive? topic about my car.

Did you say you were from Wiesbaden originally?

I used to live in Gutersloh when I was a kid, my father was in the RAF base in Germany for a while.

Do you go back to Germany much?

Sorry misnblu,

forgot to put down what I meant to say.

I had a custom chip replace my original ECU, that is reprogrammable.

Maybe a further mod for your car?  Could this enhance all the hard work you've done .....

Hope you get the timing problem fixed.

No Alfa, Ive never been back to germany since 1965.  I was 4-1/2 years old.  Id like to go back and see what its all about and get on the famous Autobahn.
No, they dont make a chip for the car yet.  They will and there are a few companies testing different units.
But it will be a while.
Ill just add some NOS (50shot) and Ill think Ill be happy.
Ill be working this weekend and will have together by wednesday.
later.
waiting forever

Well ppl, I was one notch off on the exhaust cam, it was retarded on the timing compared to the intake cam.
Ill have up and running by this coming weekend.   I hope it screams when all said and done.
Ill be installing the rear sway bar and the tie brace for the rear.  Cant wait.
Later.

Its done.  Finally got the car back on the road today after 8 weeks of tinkering.
She screams with all the mods Ive added and can still be run rather sedately when Im not on the gas.
Ill be hitting the track soon as I get the downpipe welded at the muffler shop.  Other than that, Im happy with the upgrades Ive done.
Kinda like real gran turismo.  Now if I can only afford coilovers, rear disc kit, 50 shot of Nos, and on , and on....................
Later. :D

WE got the timing wrong my bro's 73 Internation Scout II(off road monter, if it was running right) an dwere stootin 2 foot flames out the holley carb. sweet sight though.

Yeah, they are finicky on the timing too.  Ive seen that on many v8 engines do that.  It can cause problems if your not careful.
With computer controlled engines, its even more critical to have it timed right.
Im just glad to have it done.  Now I can enjoy cruising again.   woo hoo. :D

I hear ya bigblocks.  Yeah, there is no replacement for displacement for sure.
For a 4 cylinder, she will outrun most that is on the street.
Its these Honda guys that Im out to get if you know what I mean.  Time to show the Hondas and Acuras what domestic muscle is all about.
What they have to do with engine swaps and all, I can do with bolt ons and still stay with or beat them for much less.
Thats my challenge.  Kinda like gt.  LOL
Later.

Just curious, have you measured your 0-60 time with a G-Tech meter. I know it's not eh most accurate instrument, but you can get a good reading after about 10 runs.(avg.) I have a 99' Integra GSR sedan that does it in 6.3. (Avg. of 10 runs). It's a stock 1.8L DOHC VTEC engine with slight mods, (header CAI, cam gears, coilovers) and have not met a domestic that can beat me.

never run up on a big block huh??????:D

Well superchink, Id be close to your times. Remember, your car is not on the same level playing field as the cavalier. Z24 or not. theyre not level.
If GM would get their head out the arse, then we would be very competitive with the Japanese car makers.
With the advent of the vtec engine, it has pretty much ruined our chances of ever staying on the level field with acuras etc.
Whats you best 1/4 mile time. My track doesnt list the 0-60 time, so I cant tell you there on that time, but my best so far is 16.126 at 86 mph. That was with an auto tran.
That was before all the mods. Im going in about 2 weeks to break that and get into the 15's.
Now on the Honda issue.
Superchink, youve got a legit car for racing, but what I hate is the kid that has a big garbage can exhaust (unresonated) tip, grocery cart handle wing, body kit, 20 inch wheels and has done nothing to the motor. Now these are the chip on the shoulder kids that think they are the fast and the furious and I want to quell their enthusiasm by letting them know that there is more than aesthetics to make a car go fast.
I hope you understand what I mean by what Im saying. It pisses me off to see crap like that.
Now I see a lot of imports at the drags and I know who they are and what times they run. We all know each other on the street, but its these wannabe's that take the cake and see my Altezza's after the race.
BTW, when I get my 50 shot of NOS, Ill be on your playing field if you dont supe up that Acura even more.
One more thing to remember is that the Imports (Japanese) have a HUGE aftermarket base of anything that you could imagine for performance. For my z24 there is only three reputable aftermarket company and they are twice the price as the imports.
Now, who has the unfair advantage. Now do you see my point.
It aint (ugh) over yet. Later.

America needs more car people like you misnblu. All the imports Flying around like there all that.

This will sound strange, and very unlikely, but I'm setting out to do it. You've seen my truck. Its not exactly a HOt Rod right now( compared to cars, its quick for a truck) But I plan on makin my truck hit 60 in around 7 or under. It'll take me a few years to save up the money, But My main target will be Pocket Rockets. Most of which are all show and no go, And they'll think twice when they get burned by a American V-8 truck(chevy). This goal is set With the stock 350 engine(modified, of course) in a 5 year range. Im not sure If I can do it, as I said Im in HIgh School and Time& money is a huge issue, but really, wouldn't it be cool?[I'm already planning a 30HP increase, Ive got it planned for $10 a horse, done by the next year, I'm also planning a few cosmetic upgrades]
