Well I can't exactly crack jokes off about myself after you missed the golden opportunity as first replier...

You would need an explosion rather then a red X as the symbol. Displaying from the start of the race and on the mini map, for everyone else's safety.

Speaking of the retirements, I've always wondered what the red "P" next to a driver's name in the stage standings means. I figure it maens "parked" or something because I frequently see them off to the side of the road in the mine section of the Michigan stages (just before the building you drive through), with smoke coming from the bonnet.

What about online? For example in Pro Tour, I didn't think you can total your car. I've never seen a red X online. The people that always "finish" after the 30 second timer is up have the red P next to their name. I just figured it was "penalty" because it was always more then the actual time would have been (so if they were 1 second away from the finish but the time was 6 seconds off).

Edit: Full US manual here, couldn't find a mentioning of it. All language manuals are on their facebook page, left column, under "manuals".

As far as I know there's no mechanical damage in Pro Tour, only visual. Jam session's allow mechanical though. Just like how the game won't allow custom set-ups in Pro but if the host chooses it's allowed in Jam. As for the red "P" I have no clue.. it's besides people names when they retire from the race too.

I just rethought it, anyone who DNFs gets a "P". Probably stands for Penalty, I always thought it was "Pit" as in Pit Stopped, which doesn't make a whole lot of sense..

I thought the 'P' was to show the time was Predicted as they didn't finish in the 30secs.
The 'P' time is usually tied to the stage winner's time. If the stage winner sets a time of, say 1:24.000, then the 'P' time will be something like 1:54.000 - and it happens to anyone who gets a 'P' time.
