My pc is really acting bogged down, slow as a snail :irked: I've un-installed all programs not needed, and I make sure I run Norton system works every day the one button check up now takes ages doing the registry scan so I'm assuming this is my main problem area right here, and it always has around 20 or more errors! I'm using Widows XP pro edition and I've never tried messing with the resgistry ever in a pc before so I'm asking some advice on how to get this thing running smooth again it's doing my nut in :irked: Can anyone help? :(

Let Norton run, don't mess with it. Then have it fix all errors. After it finishes, try the regestry scanner again with it, and if it finds more errors, have it fix them. Either do that or do a fresh start and re-install everything. Hopefully you still have the CD's that your programs ORIGINATED from, right? And hopefully you can backup your data files elsewhere....

Well I always let norton fix the errors but they are back again within a day :irked: I guess I might just have to back up all the programs, as I can't do a windows re-install because we didn't get the XP disc with it ...bloody pre-installed  Is there a way to re-install windows from the system ? I used to be able to do this in win ME  that would only make things worse though, right?

Do you know when exactly it started acting slowly? If you did, you could try a System Restore which will reset all your registry settings back to what they were on the specified date.

Or, run an spyware program like Ad-Aware or Spybot: Search & Destroy and scan your system for any adware/spyware that might be running in the background.

You might want to try running Disk Cleanup (Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools > Disk Cleanup) and remove any temporary files and such. Howver, don't select Compress Old Files, as this will decrease peformance. When yuo compress files, Windows has to decompress them, open them up, then re-compress them when you close it. Also, have you tried defragging your system?

Finally, if all else fails. Format your HD and re-install your software.

With Windows XP I would suggest not using the system restre to tell the truth. It will just delay the enevitable to be honest Lotus. I would suggest, just for insurance, making a backup of important files on your computer and trying a repair install of XP. The reason for this is that if your registry on the computer is messed up it is like a human having his or her brain re-routed. Basically that person's brain would use the touch sensation part of the brain for tasting and the smell snesation part of the brain for hearing, etc. The registry is what every program looks to to see if it is doing the right thing.

Uh, how can you do a repair of XP if you do not have a XP disc?

You probably have spyware running in the background.

I think installing lots of programs has slowed it down a lot  I run Ad-Aware regulary and it always finds tons of **** that shouldn't be there, and just recently it found some stuff that it said it couldn't remove :irked:

I'm pretty on the ball when it comes to disc cleanup and defrag and scan disc etc.. I always rountinely do at least one of them every day. I'm not sure what you mean on the compress the old files though.. when I load disc cleanup it says :scanning... compress old files, then it takes ages before offering to clean, does this mean it is doing what you say it shouldn't be doing, and how can I change it?
I have seen the option to compress to save disc space in the C drive properties but that is un-checked, I thought you might have meant this one but now I'm not so sure.

Oh, did you defragment your hard drives? I strongly suggest doing that if not done so already

Doing one now ;) :D

I would format and start again if you are getting as much spyware as you reckon you are.

No, it takes a while because Disk Cleanup has to scan your hardrive for temporary folders and old files that can be compressed. If you have the patience to wait, it'll come up with a options "Temporary Files, Compress Old Files, etc". Check all of them except for Compress Old Files and hit OK.

Now, how big are/is your hard drive/s? And how many partitions do you have, and what sizes are they?

I made it look like I had more than 1 HD, sorry :P just one 30gb HD, no partitions ;)

Does anyone have a list of the well known programs that contain spyware ? that would be a handy thing to have :banghead:

I'm going to try that spybot proggie now and see if it's good ...

BTW thankyou all for trying to help :)

I know Cydoor comes with Kazaa....

I suggest starting over from scratch, and don't install Kazaa. I also suggest getting a larger hard drive.

53 instances of spyware! I'd say that is why you're computer is lagging so much - you have so much spyware running in the background.

Cydoor is just one of the many spyware things in Kazaa. My advice is to remove Kazaa first, then remove the spyware with Spybot S&D (or whatever you are using).

You definately need to get yourself a copy of XP (or some other OS) and format your harddrive.

Who's a he ? you should know by now :P anyway I think Shannon was meaning get hold of the disc.. for my OP ;)
