Chrysler have a concept based on the PT Cruiser at this year's Paris Auto Show.

It might be my jaded eyes, but the concept seems to quite similar to Renault's new Avantime. I'd be interested in peoples' comments - there are obviously marked styling differences, but a largish front drive two door van/people mover concept isn't that common an idea.

Pfft. The Cruiser is merely a natural evolution of the original Cruiser, whose prototype debuted five years ago. The Avantime is a joke. :P

Avantime is a joke indeed. No competition here the cruiser wins.

I'd be interested to know why you think the Avantime is a joke.

I'm not overly fussed either way - the thing's French, so it's bound to be a bit different, but at least Renault are trying something original.

When standing alone, the Avantime is downright beautiful, but put it next to one of its competitors and it makes you wonder why they even bother.

For over a year now, I've been trying to figure out just how I feel about modern French cars. The above sums it up perfectly.

The Avantime is another case of excellent packaging (similar to the Fiat Multipla), at the total cost of aesthetics.

Well, that's a comment that could be made about the line up of just about all of the French manufacturers - do any of their cars lead their class?

In style or in actual greatness of their autos?

In actual greatness. Some of their current crop are reasonably good looking - Peugeot 206, Renault Laguna, Citroen....uh...mmm... - but they don't lead their classes in terms of being actual good cars.

The Peugeot 307 is class-leading! The C5 is a pretty decent sedan, too.

Up against the following:
- the Astra
- the 323 (or whatever you call it there)
- the Civic (well, maybe not)
- the Corolla
- the Lancer (well, maybe not)
- the Nissan Pulsar (or whatever you it there - well, maybe not)
I would not call the 307 'class-leading'.

And whilst the C5 is a decent sedan, there are plenty of medium to large front drive sedans you'd take ahead of it.
