I've just spent the last 2 hours trying to find out whats wrong wth the Clio on my driveway, it's a 1.5 DCI engine 2004 model Clio.

The engine won't start, the starter motor is going but nothings firing up, I've checked the filter and that seems okay, the lights, radio ect all work fine and I've checked if the battery is low so that doesn't seem to be the problem. I've tried to start it about 11 or 12 times and it started once but when it started ticking over the rev's dropped instantly and it cut out.

Can anyone help identify the problem, many thanks in advance.

Problem #1: You have one on your driveway. That's a BIGGIE.

Problem #2: Your ECU is playing up. Phone your local Renault dealership. It's a warranty job. They'll keep it for two weeks, scratch their heads a bit, smack it with a lump hammer and try to bill you £700 for it whilst you repeatedly tell them it's a warranty job.

Problem 1 will go away when the car gets fixed and my mum picks it up.

Problem 2, youre pretty sure it's an ECU problem then, thanks for that Famine.

It seems to be a common fault with them. My girlfriend's '04 (well... 54) Clio hasn't had it, but her sister's '04 Clio has. Same symptoms to the letter.

Okay, thanks alot again Famine I'll let the parents know, pity it's not something you can just fix yourself though.

Could it be the battery?Happened to my dad's 94 BMW 525i that's sitting on the lawn
Well the starter motor needs power to start so it couldn't be the battery. I think it's what Famine said. It's the ECU. Damn unreliable Renaults...

Why did you post anyway 300TURBOVS? The Clio is probably fixed now.
