News: Trophy puts 'Mega' in Megane
Renault is about to start development work on the Megane Trophy - which will next season star in its own one-make international series. And speculation has already started that the car could breed a road-going version similar to the extraordinary Clio Renaultsport 255.
With its outrageous styling, lowered bodywork and mid-mounted engine, the Trophy is even more of an eye-catcher than the Clio. With 320bhp going through a six-speed sequential box, it's going to be even more of a neck-twister, too. Highlights of the car's specification include:
Tubular chassis, 950kg all-up weight
Modified 3.5-litre V6 engine from Espace and Vel Satis
320bhp and 228lbf.ft, 155mph top speed
Vented discs all around, six-pot front calipers
The car will feature in eight or nine meetings next season, at venues like Le Mans, Donington, Monza, Monaco and Estoril.
Renault estimates that a vehicle will cost less than 100,000 Euros - that's around £65,000. For a full season's racing, teams will pay around £125,000. A lot for a Renault... but what price a Trophy?
