Renault Sport has announced it will reveal an even hotter version of the Mk III Mégane RS. Their new top-of-the-line Mégane will be revealed on June 17th at the Nordschleife (where a Renault Sport track day is being held at the same time). So what do you guys/gals think? Is this the new successor to the hardcore Mégane Mk II R26.R?

EDIT:

It has been revealed before the event on June 17th already: http://www.topspeed.com/cars/renault/2011-renault-megane-rs-265-trophy-ar111014.html

So, it's not the successor of the R26.R, but rather a souped-up RS Cup. The specs are slightly better than the 'standard' RS Cup, and they're only going to build 500. Slightly disappointed here, even though it's still the best handling FWD you can get. :D

Renault are undoubtedly making some of the most desirable cars out there at the moment.

Good-o.

The interesting bit is at 1:26:

I have that same app and the lap times are displayed in the format '0:00:00.00'. So I think it's either an 8:20:33.53 or an 8:10:33.53. The first is approximately 4 seconds slower than the Mk II R26.R, the latter would be 6 seconds faster. What do you guys think?

The way its speeding over the Nurb' I would guess it ran 8:10:33.53 :D

I am disapoint, I was hoping for a brand new idea.

Megane V6 :sly:

261bhp, costing £3,800 more. Not worth it I don't think nothing special added, a £400 remap would get you more than that.
It now matches in power and acceleration the Seat cupra R, even has a bit more torque than the VAG car.
The Cupra R costs £25,995 though, the Renault RS costs £27,820.
Overpriced, but they justify it by only making 500. Doesn't make it good value though.
If they make an R26R replacement in the future that would be the one to have, which might have even more power as well as all the cool parts and stripped out interior.

Yeah, it doesn't add a whole lot to the already loaded 'standard' cup-version. So there's no replacement for the R26.R just yet. ;) Still, I'd pick the Mégane Trophy over the Cupra R any day. The suspension, LSD and handling are definitely worth the extra 2k.

It's not all about performance, in fact for me outright performance is quite low down the list.

True, just look up some reviews of the normal Mégane Mk III RS vs the Mazda 3 Mk II MPS. Of course, that doesn't mean the Mazda, or the Seat are bad cars, because they're not. 👍

I was just thinking £5k would get you custom LSD, suspension and set-up modifications, and other parts to.
Are both cars in GT5?

I think 5k could get you all of those yes, but they wouldn't be setup to match each other, and that's exactly where the Mégane RS shines.

Unfortunately, no, neither car is in GT5. How I wish they were, and the Séat and other hot-hatches too.

Renault Sport just announced that the Mégane RS Trophy set the record for FF cars on the Nordschleife at a very nice 8:07.97. 👍

Insanely fast, and a rather desirable hot hatch. I still maintain that the best thing about it it's the styling, looks entirely correct to me. I love the looks. :embarrassed:

Well, considering that it had to beat a Chevy Cobalt...

The R26R had already beaten the Cobalt. 8:16 ish vs. 8:22 ish.

Incidentally, this new Renault has now pipped the NSX-R (well, one of them - it appears there are a few on the list). It's pretty amazing what these new hot hatches can do.

I have that same app and the lap times are displayed in the format '0:00:00.00'. So I think it's either an 8:20:33.53 or an 8:10:33.53.

8 hours?

So they just put the stickiest tires available on a FWD car and set a record? Not saying it's a bad car or anything (tires aside, I'm sure it's still one of the best handlers), but I wouldn't be surprised if you could get the same times in other cars with special tires.

They didn't use special tyres, just plain Bridgestone RE050A, which come standard on the Mégane RS 265 Trophy, as well as on lots of other cars (e.g. BMW/Nissan Z/etc. etc.). The record was also witnessed by the invited press (Evo Magazine amongst others).

The Trophy 265 is 67kgs lighter than the current Cup. So I wonder how they did that?
It is still 90kgs heavier than the R26R. But the R26R is 35bhp down on power.
The Trophy has 19" wheels the R26R only had 18" wheels, there is a grip difference there.
Those 19" RE050A tyres are more expensive than 18" Toyo R888 semi-slick tyres of the same width.

Where did you find it is 67kgs lighter than the regular Cup? None of the changes they made reflect this amount of weight.

Also, I think Renault still might have the 'Radicale' version of the Mégane Mk III up their sleeve. :)

Impressive lap, surely it would give many sports cars a run for their money.

Nice vid! But I read on Evo Magazines site he made the record at his second lap, and he was coming from the pits in this one?

Weird, because the gross weights the same, yet kerb weight is different? Though I see in the vid they did remove the rear view mirror.
Gross weight means how much they can potentially weigh when fully loaded. They must all have the same tolerance on suspension or steering or whatever, which does not mean they must weigh the same when not carrying a load. So it would suggest the Trophy could have a higher payload than the others, which looking at the specs, it does indeed have a higher payload capacity.

Thanks for the explanation, the meaning was a bit lost in translation there (for me anyway, being a non-native English speaker :P). 👍 Then I'd like to know where the difference comes from too, because I can't imagine what they left out that's worth 67 kilograms.

I asked Renault UK this question by email:
Hello can you explain the 67kgs weight difference between the Megane 265 Trophy and the Cup model, as indicated in the technical specifications on your website. What has been done to remove this amount of weight from the Trophy 265?
According to them this is not a street car but a racing car.

This is the response I got:
Thank you for your recent email enquiring about the weight difference between the Mégane Renaultsport 250 Cup and Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy Limited Edition.

As a responsible manufacturer, we are committed to providing high quality products and services. We take customer feedback extremely seriously and will always try to assist with any enquires. This is all part of our commitment to providing you with a positive customer experience. The Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy Limited Edition is a race version of the street vehicle, Mégane Renaultsport 250 Cup. To improve its 0-60mph performance, reduction in weight has been achieved by removing equipment, such as climate control (air conditioning remains as standard), tyre pressure monitor, exterior Renaultsport styling, rear armrests, electrically adjustable drivers seat and heated front seats. The reduction in weight has enabled the new limited edition Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy to set a new benchmark time for a production-specification front-wheel drive car at the Nürburgring’s infamous Nordschleife circuit. This performance beats the attempts of several far more powerful, rear-wheel drive cars
You will find the Mégane Renaultsport boasts two specific features aimed at heightening the enjoyment delivered by the vehicle's performance:- Renaultsport Dynamic Management: This enables one of three modes for the ESP to be selected: 'On' (the default mode), 'Sport' (for less intrusive ESP action) and 'Off' (complete disengagement) and the Renaultsport Monitor. The Renaultsport Monitor technology takes its inspiration from the world of motor sport, with a central dashboard display that provides information about the demands made of the main engine functions, real-time engine performance, gear change warning, calibration and display of the throttle pedal mapping, lateral acceleration, 0-60 acceleration, laptimes. The fitment of the Renaultsport Monitor as standard, backs up the feeling of this being a serious and sensational driving experience
The Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy offers 132.5 horsepower per litre. Our engineers have drawn on all the experience acquired by Renaultsport at racetracks across the world to squeeze this performance out of a-2.0 litre turbo engine and thanks to its powerful Brembo® brakes, the Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy stops just as quickly as it drives. With a Limited-slip differnential (LSD) ensuring optimum traction at all times, regardless of grip, driving style or the type of corner. This combined with the PerfoHub independent steering-axis front suspension minimises the effects of torque steer and allows the driver to benefit fully from the extra traction for a more reassuring drive. Furthermore, the Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy is fitted with high-performance Bridgestone Potenza RE050A tyres in a 235/35 R19Y size – perfect for lovers of dynamic driving. The asymmetric tread pattern was inspired by the Bridgestone Potenza tyres used in Formula One racing. The outer part of the tread is similar to racing ‘slicks’, while the inner section is modelled on F1 wet-weather tyres. The result is a level of control that is without equal.
The manufacturer's recommended retail price for the Mégane Renaultsport 250 Cup is a competitive £24,020.00 and £27,820.00 for the Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy Limited Edition.

Only 50 Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy are destined for the UK, so this car will be exclusive as well as desirable. To ensure all purchasers of a Mégane Renaultsport 265 Trophy get to test their cars to the limit they will also get free access to all the Renaultsport organized Track Days in the UK in 2012.
