i tought about this thread a long time ago, but this week just made me do it...

the first 3 corners of trial mountain are really tricky, so i did like 1000 restarts in that section :yuck:

i consider myself a restart maniac. i push too hard and miss, then restart... something crazy, once in a while i got so stressed that i make a mistake BEFORE the lap starts!!!

for me, in a real stat, i think for every completed lap i have 6 or 7 restarts... and this is really boring...

i know that lap the course is crucial, and it does make you better in the track, but i just got this bad habit of keep restarting...

so i started this thread just to see what my fellow WRS racers do...

how do you feel about restarting?

i also put a little poll just to get an idea based on %

a lot, of the time, but i realise all the time that it stuffs my consistency so i try not to, but old habits die hard... getting better though...

I restart all the time. I sometimes don't even see the last sector for my first few hours.

As soon as I go off the track, or miss an apex, or know I've done something wrong. It's a restart. I'm not one of those people who chase 'dirty' ghosts either'.

I tend not to re-start, doing the rest of the lap gives you practise for the rest of the track. 👍

As for chasing dirty ghosts, i like to set a nice clean but safe ghost early on and build from there. With dirty ghosts you end up trying to gain time where you really theres no scope to do so. Your braking points are likely to be totally wrong and 'across grass expiditions' really aren't punished enough in GT4.

When i set my M3@infineon qualifing time, i spent ages chasing a ghost that went wide in a corner and got all 4 wheels on the grass. I just could'nt make up the time it gained in that sector no matter what i did. In the end i switched it off and beat it within a handful of laps.

At the beginning of the week i tend not to re-start so much, as in my mind it is better to see how the car handles over the lap as a whole.

As the week/session progresses, and i start refining my lines, the rate of re-starts increases.

If later in the session i mess-up in the first sector, then i will re-start because i know the lap is scrapped, so what's the point?

If i mess-up the end of the lap, then i carry on, because even-though the lap is scrapped, i can get a good start to the next lap.

This week if i screwed up on the final two corners i would stamp on the brakes, turn round, go back to before the last sector point, turn round again, and make the run to the line again.
Where the game re-starts you from isn't far enough back to give full speed over the line so when you re-start you have to run a full lap anyway before you get a good start.

So, long story short, it varies!

Restart maniac, I am a perfectionist so after the first hour I restart like crazy.

I am also the same :P ... for every 25 times I cross the start line .... I cross the finish line 1 time :D

after getting the banker save the odds of crossing the finish line after that are worse than setting the original banker ;)

I also don't restart very often early in the week. I just keep going and hope I learn from my mistakes. If I find I am doing the same mistakes a lot, I take a break. Usually this means taking the little Fiat around one of the smaller tracks.

The one place that I am constantly restarting in on the special conditions events. That 5 second penalty really pisses me off when it was caused by the AI clipping me.

I restart when I ruin the lap before the last T time, which means that I restart 9 laps out of 10 :(

Like mentioned above, I tend to run longer without restarting early in the week, then restart less. This week I have to say I've run the longest stints without restarting simply because you can't hit the finish line at 143 MPH without a flying installation lap. I think I saw 25-30 laps consecutive this week.

The only other time I've gone a significant number of laps in a row was at Cathedral Rocks when I got the "Lap Memory Full" or something to that effect a couple of times...

I don't restart very much, unless I completely stuff it. I usually like to do 5-10 laps in a row, and usually the best lap is lap 4 or 5 for some reason. If I screw up one sector, I just concentrate on nailing the next sector, and so on. I feel that even if I screw up the first sector, the more repetition I have in the other sectors the better. That way when I do nail the first sector, I have the confidence I can rip through the other sectors. Hope this makes sense....

In the past, one of my biggest problems was with clock lock. Paying too much attention to splits and then getting over cautious or the opposite, over aggressive when I saw a good split. Now I never look at splits or my ghost. I just drive until my concentration degrades to the point where I need a break, then look at the best lap in the sequence to see if it is my best so far, and if it's clean. I know that some say they improve by ghost chasing, but it just doesn't work for me. It gets my brain working during the lap, and for me, that's a dangerous thing!

I recently discovered another fault in my driving that I am working hard on correcting. That is the rookie racer mistake of looking right in front of the hood of the car (I drive with the roof cam view) instead of to the next corner, sequence, etc. I can't believe I was doing it, but sure enough I wasn't looking far enough ahead! :ouch:

The cool thing about GT4 IMO is that the physics are good enough to allow you to drive with eyes forward as you do in RL racing. In other words, the ability to anticipate your exit, and let your natural eye hand coordination guide you through the apex without glancing down to confirm the position of your car. I've been able to drive much more consistently, miss fewer apexes, and have fewer shunts and offs than before, but it's a work in progress because it seems I've been doing it a long time without realizing it. :indiff:

Interesting thread Francisco! 👍

Never even heard of that one....whoops! I Need to work on consistency I see.

well, thanks for the responses... good to know that i´m not the only one fighting with this bad habit...

funny thing is... only one i got the messege of "end of recording replay" just like shig, it was in week 9, in the rally...

Pretty much same for me.

Only times i run and run and run is when i dont know the track/car too well. But after the 1st 1hour i restart when ever i mistake or loose too much time to my ghost.

I think my record may be 7 laps in a row with out a single restart.

Id be lucky to do more than 2 laps in a row without restarts.

Im a restart maniac AFTER ive learnt the combo, but until then i force myself to run complete laps even if i mistake, as i have to "learn" the combo.

No use nailing Start - T2 perfectly after 100 restarts only to arrive at the last sector and be unfamilar with the track.

I aim to get some decent saves, then i restart like a maniac until i beat it.

I dont restart much. I ususally dont even stop if I totally biff a lap.

I guess I always figured the more time you get on more of the track the better off you are.

i generally only restart if I wonk the first sector... most tracks are only 1 min long.... you waste more time in the menu than you do just finishing the lap and staying "in the groove"
the only track i do a thousand restarts on is the ring... for obvious time and wear+tear reasons. (unless its arcade mode, then the mileage doesn't really matter)

I don't like to restart , i prefer doing my first lap gingerly so as to keep the ghost following a comfortable line . But if ime still perplexed by that first sector then ile restart chronically .

ok, thamks for the responses guys...

i think you can close this thread and send to the archive cyril...

just one question to you, can i view who voted on what? or i have to be premium to do that?

No. I can't even see who voted for what.

When you created the poll, you had the option of making it public or not. Unfortunately, you didn't make it public.

What daan ^ said.

But why do you want to close the thread ? People might be interested in giving their opinion about it in the future.
I think it could well stay open since there is no deadline on the poll.

oh my god

:dunce: :dunce: :dunce:

i forgot that...

anyway, i was a bit lost about this, i thought you had to close the thread to see results, anything like that...

my mistake :dunce:

Learnt Lesson 1612 ;
Be careful when starting a thread topped by a poll . Give complete choices . Public is better for everyone , and will only scare away the wussies who want to cause trouble w/ their second a/c .
