"Ricers"

Hey everyone, I'm planning on getting a 240sx hatch pretty soon and I'm also planning on putting some "tasteful" mods on it. To what point would you guys call a car that has been modified so much that it's been "riced out"?

The amount of mods isn't what makes a car ricey, the kind of mods you're doing does that. Cheap fart cans for exhausts, pointless wings, fake hood scoops, that stuff.

This is Ricey...

It's not hard to make a 240sx look tasteful.
All you need is some coilovers, a nice set of wheels with proper offsets and sizing for the style, and a clean body.

No body kits unless they are from well known manufacurers(This applys to every car)

That is a very good answer. Any "go fast" part that you add to your car that don't actually make it go fast is questionable taste to me (body kits, NOS stickers, any stickers, all badges...).

Another place people go wrong is thinking:
"It needs to look more like a "JDM" drift car..."
Unless you actually intend to drift the car it will always look silly.

While the main thing to remember is it's your car and you can do what you want with it, but the disturbing, loud, and silly sounding coffee can exhaust is annoying everyone on the road.

personally I like the looks of the car stock.

P.S. please don't forget improving a car is more than just looks, the engine has room for small mods that are always tasteful.

thanks for everyone's input, I guess i'll just moderately mod it lol, I was just thinking about lowering it and changing into some TE37s and maybe a X-type spoiler rather than the stock 240 one.

Look at it this way, don't go overboard.

If it looks like this:

or this:

or maybe even this:

Then you went too far.

For me, some of the things that make a car ricer are
-Unusually bright paint jobs
-Too many decals
-Spoilers that are way too big for the car in question
-Exhaust that is too big for the car
-Neon lights
-Ridiculously over sized speakers in and around the car. Ex being having no trunk space or back seat due to stereos/woofers taking occupancy
-Ridiculous camber
-Over sized wheels, or wheels with no taste
-NOS
-hydraulics
-Car lowered too much

Well yes, 'rice' is pretty distinctive, even now. Common elements where I am are those rally-style boxy spoilers or the cheap, floppy looking sort you can buy at any place that sells car parts, stickers (especially those little 'flame' stickers people put on the side of the car behind the wheels), stickers that go all the way across the top of the windshield, spraypainted or big flashy rims (the gap between the tire and the inside of the wheel well is there for a reason), two tone paint...basically anything that looks cheap and/or stupid.

Oh god...

For me:
-Nonworking hood/roof scoops (why a roof scoop in the first place?! ITS NOT MID ENGINED!!!)
-50" rims on a small sports car...it's just ugly and proves your a 🤬
-Giant, taped on, cheap, ugly wing
-Body kits that are just too big/ugly/don't fit the car/made of cardboard
-Fart cans (aka giant exhaust pipe/horrible sounding muffler)...just horrible sounding and disgraceful
-5883738 tv screens in the pillars, seats, trunk (wtf?), hood, roof...and so on
-Chrome tail lights (UGLY)
-"Tricked out" cars that have no performance mods whatsoever in a car with an ugly body kit, horrible paint job, giant exhaust tips, and fake hood scoops

Yeah...just throw on some nice black rims maybe an inch or two wider and paint the car black - about all I'd do to keep my dignity (not including engine and suspension mods).

Here's my rule of thumb. If it is an aesthetic upgrade and is not availible in GT5 than it is a ricey upgrade downgrade.

Do you care what other people think?
Do you tune your car for other people recognition and respect?

"Tuning is bashing out money you don't have to impress people you don't know."

Seriously, do what YOU want. As long as it is not drop dead ridiculous, who cares. It's your car, you should like it and enjoy it, and **** the rest.

Bodykits can make a car look good, doesn't have to do with how known a bodykit manufactor is either to guarantee non ricey products (veilside).
Two tone jobs looking ricey : muhahahaha yeah like the Audi TT quattro sport (Limited edition).

A good rule of thumb though is (and most are above) don't fake it. A huge bodykit and an 1.6l engine is just :ouch:. Fake air intakes (though that would make 99% of factory cars with vents "ricey"), big exaust, very loud and 100 hp is not good.

Finally, I haven't seen much bodykits for 240 that look really nice. Make some noce engine mods, some lip in front, nice set of rims,...

Those are just 2 examples. I think they are ricey because, well, look at them. They are ugly, with unneccesary upgrades, when I look at them (especially the last) I think a kid who had a little too much papers and tape and just sticked it to daddy's car. No offence.

Now, just to show what I think are modified beauties:

That is a beauty because, it's modified, but it has a clean look, no overly agressive body works, no big difference in the paint, and it all in all just looks gorgeous

A little the same, a bit more body but still no "sharp edges", keeps the style, the paints work well together

Damn, I think EA and Universal has greatly infected my taste

And I agree on Ibo's rule of thumbs, I have a little the same thinking, the car must represent what's in it or less (meaning being a sleeper)

*MW M3 GTR*

The only thing modified about that visually at least, is the paint. It's an M3 GTR, a road going version of an M3 race car built for homogilation purposes. ;)

And 'ricer' to me is huge, loud, horrible exhausts, and body kits which do nothing but make you look like an idiot.

Everything in the blue car. Poor Peugeot, no car deserves that.

This is the definition of ricer. It's basically any modification that makes you look like a gigantic tool. Examples: oversized mufflers, absurdly large spoilers, body kits made of cheap plastic, lowered suspension to the point of dragging, stupid amounts of camber, and most importantly all these things put onto garbage cars that have no business being modified.

TBH, ricers come in all forms...even ones who do their mods right... I would call someone a ricer if they took a an STI ( even if it was modded right ) and started hauling ass in and out of traffic at 5pm as if it was fast and furious time.

I wouldn't say the guy is a ricer. It sounds like a dumb:censored: with more money than sense.

I was cruising along going the speed limit I pulled up beside a GMC Jimmy that was lowered with big ass rims at a light n I got called a ricer by some white guy and his friend and I actually took offence to it. He said "look at this ricer" I gave him the finger and told him **** YOU!! (Yeah I shoulda called that guy a potatoer or a breadhead.) he then said "you want a piece of this???" so I said come and follow me. I drove to a parking lot and I got out with a 9 iron. Then they drove away. cowards.. Yeah I play golf. I was pissed I hate SUVs with big ass rims. they're so stupid to me. Be a man raise that **** and put bigger tires. WTF is the point of having an lowered SUV with 24s. Thats a damn station wagon on big ass rims.
I drive a 97 civic coupe lowered with drag 16" dr20 rims type r style headlights and a lip. I have I/H/E and an S2000 muffler. (btw the S2000 exhaust is awesome really quiet but when you give it gas it sounds pretty good.) I don't have stickers I dont have a bodykit I don't have a fart can. I want my car to look good but I don't care about speed I don't street race. gas is already expensive. Oh and if anyone thinks a ricer is a asian driving a modified honda they can go to hell.

In the end everyone has a different definition of ricer its derogatory. But hey its your car. Do whatever you think looks good who cares what other people think.

Damn son, 16" rims from the Discount Tire brand? They must be mad tyte y0!

But a little future advice, you sound like you were just as at fault, if not more at fault than the guy in the Jimmy. You also committed a crime by threatening them with a golf club, and that's probably something you shouldn't talk about online (at least on GTP). You might want to chill out on the road because acting like that is how you end up in a bad position.

One of these days you're going to do that and one of two things is going to happen. 1. The guy you wield a golf club against is going to have a gun. 2. Or a cop will see you and haul you off to jail. Trying to fight someone like that is incredibly stupid. You got lucky.
