Today, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame announced its 2015 induction class. Six acts made the cut this year, including:

Lou Reed
Stevie Ray Vaughn and Double Trouble (winner of the fan vote)
Joan Jett and the Blackhearts
Green Day (entering on their first year of eligibility)
Bill Withers
Paul Butterfield Blues band

Ringo Starr will be given the award for Music Excellence whereas the 1950's R&B group the "5" Royals will receive the Early Influence award.

The induction ceremony will be open to the public, so if you are anywhere in the Cleveland area, secure your tickets this Thursday.

It's rather sad that SRV needed a fan vote to get in while Green Day* gets in on their first year.

*While I do like Green Day, I think there are plenty of other artists that should be higher on the list to get inducted.

Actually, the fan vote is there to bypass the nomination committee. The two previous winners of the fan vote, KISS and Rush, both made it into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame the same year that they won the poll. It just so happened that this year, more than one inductee made it from the fan poll (Joan Jett, Bill Withers and Paul Butterfield Blues band all got a combined 28% of the vote)

Hmm, I thought Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were already in the RRHOF.

And Green Day got in? WTF...

Hmm, I thought Joan Jett and the Blackhearts were already in the RRHOF.
They were nominated twice, once in 2011, and again the following year. Joan Jett's Wikipedia page doesn't give an explanation as to why they were passed over.

A little part of my childhood jumped with joy to see Green Day make it, but as @Slash said, why hasn't Iron Maiden made it yet?

To be honest, I don't know what the nomination committee looks for in a selection. If I were them, I wouldn't allow the Beastie Boys to get in, but yet, allow Jim Croce, one of the men who started the 70's Singer and Songwriter movement to get in. It is not their body of work that is the issue, but rather the fact that the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame is supposed to represent everything Rock and Roll, not rap.

When you consider the fact that the band has well over 15 albums none of them being "bad"....just boggles my mind.

I will never understand why Iron Maiden hasn't made it yet.
Get in line. No, seriously, get in line.

I'm thankful for what they have now, at least. Hell, I crapped bricks and squealed when Rush was finally inducted. They have what, nearly 20 records and recognized as one of the greatest bands in the world, and 2013 was finally the year? But hey, who said some clunky ol' reward had to mean anything. As long as someone likes them.

Wait a minute. Green Day have been inducted.

Green Day? Green Day? Those three clowns have been inducted into a hall of fame alongside iconic musicians whilst they churn out drivel?

The Offspring should be inducted in there and eventhough I'm not much of a fan, Bad Religion and Blink 182 should be there before those morons.

From the way it's worded on the RRHOF site, "The fan votes will comprise a fans’ ballot that will be tallied along with the other ballots to choose the 2015 inductees." So basically the fan vote makes up a certain ratio of the total ballot. Which makes me think that winning the poll doesn't strictly guarantee induction. You could presumably get 100% of the fan vote, but if the RRHOF side of the vote is unanimously against you, you could fail to make it... depending on what ratio of the total vote the fan votes account for.

Slightly upsetting, as that means that artists who did very well on the fan poll but failed to get inducted, such as Nine Inch Nails this year with 22% of the vote, probably never will be since clearly the RRHOF side of the vote isn't very keen towards that particular artist. But it's entirely possible that these artists just missed induction by a hair and still have hope... provided they get nominated again.

Even more upsetting is that this means that the RRHOF side of the vote was quite keen towards Green Day, who got in despite a meager 2.59% of the fan vote.

The requirements for entry for the RRHOF are 25 years after a debut single or album. To put that into perspective, the NFL and MLB hall of fames require a career+5 years provision to be eligible for nomination. NBA? They require players to be retired for 5 years like the NFL and MLB, but the difference between the three lie in the coach and referees requirements. They have the option to be retired for 5 years like the players, or they can work their craft for 25 years to be eligible.

Now what does that have to do with Green Day? Their debut work was released in 1989.

Why hasn't Iron Maiden made it in? Because someone has to take the 'shunned' mantle that KISS championed for so long. Green Day isn't even the questionable one on that list, Withers and Butterfield are as they are considered soul and blues, respectively, but I guess this SHOULDN'T surprise me, or anyone for that matter, as Johnny Cash and ABBA have already been inducted. I think the problem is that at it's roots, 'Rock and Roll' is really just an incredibly broad term than takes influence from damn near everything, as opposed to the 'Rock' Genre that most of us usually jump to, myself included.

New question, who gets in first, Iron Maiden or Jethro Tull?
