A new rival for the ford focus is set for britain..the roewe 450

Hidden away among a convoy of Roewe's disguised 750 saloons, this prototype of the family hatchback-sized 450 was spotted in Sweden completing its first twilight test. But while its siblings are remakes of familiar ex-Longbridge models, it's obvious this car will break fresh ground for the ambitious firm, which has privately admitted it is committed to making waves in Europe from 2009.

A spiritual successor to the Rover 45, this new machine is expected to follow on from design work begun by MG Rover before the firm folded. Under the skin, the car is based on a shortened 75 platform, and it has appeared so quickly because it's taken advantage of development which MG Rover had already carried out on a replacement model for the original 45. But SAIC hasn't done this alone. British engineering experts have also had a hand in the car's evolution, specifically through spin-off firm Ricardo 2010 Consultants Ltd, created to work with the Chinese on developing new models.

Made up of hand-picked experts, many of whom were employed by MG Rover, the 2010 consultancy will soon be taken over entirely by SAIC. However, it's the link with Ricardo that gives us a further clue to this prototype's identity. While the vis-ually distorting lines and chequer effect are intended to distract the eye, the distinctive pattern is a regular Ricardo disguise. This - coupled with the fact that the vehicle is rolling on Rover 75 wheels - is further evidence that it is a Roewe.

Several other revealing details are also clear to see. The four-door body has a high waistline similar to the Honda Civic's, and while the rear is heavily cloaked, you can still see a distinctive split exhaust pipe.

Expected to be offered only as a saloon, the fresh model's interior is set to break new ground for China's car industry. Quality is anticipated to rival that of European competitors, with an emphasis on the traditional Rover strengths of luxury and comfort. Thanks to the extensive input from British engineers and with many miles of European development driving still to be completed, the 450's dynamics should also be up to the job of matching many rivals on the UK market.

A Euro IV emissions-compatible 2.0-litre diesel unit is being worked on, and it's thought that a turbo-charged 1.8-litre petrol unit based on Rover's K Series will be offered as well. Producing around 150bhp, it's hoped that the motor will boast a competitive blend of performance, fuel economy and refinement.

It's not yet known exactly when the compact family saloon will go on sale, but it is tipped to make an appearance at one of next year's top international motor shows. Roewe is expected to launch in the UK at around the same time.

Meanwhile, MG will also re-appear under the ownership of Chinese firm Nanjing. For the latest images of Roewe's 750, take a look at www.roewe.com.cn the manufacturer's official website.

I don't really like roewe's but i think this one might actually be good, ive got to admit it does look quite nice (in relation to the previous 45). please post your views and comments on this car.

I think it looks kinda nice, its seriously ripping off Audi's front grille but it is what the new Rover 45 would have probably looked like if they had got their act together but along as its well built I think it would sell well for all the nostalgic Rover lovers because it has the essence of the 75's style.

Looks like the front came straight from a VAG product. Inspiration for the rear seems to originate from Bentley. I knew the Chinese were good at copying things and selling them at lower prices than the original, but this has got to go.

Chinese companies are masters of copycat :(
It is gonna be a long time before they start making cars with their own idea

Its the beginning of the end folks. Heres to hoping the Chinese don't take over in automobiles any time soon...

If the competition can't keep them at bay, then they either deserve the market share or the buying public is a load of morons.

So, then, the buying public is a load of morons....

I see Acura RL more than anything....
That is, with the Audi grille tacked on.

I honestly hope that this and every Roewe fails miserably. Until they can come up with decent, original designs I don't think they deserve to be selling cars.

Jesus, in this thread some of you guys are being ridiculous hostile to the Chinese! I think that its good that they at least making an effort, it will take them time to develop but eventually they will produce decent cars, Rover would be dead if it wasn't for them!

As for copying styles..... you have to be joking nearly every manufacturers on the planet copies each other! especially in competitive classes such as saloon and super mini. Ok so for example if the Jag XK and the DB9 look similar... so in that case they don't deserve to be selling cars!

Actually theres a thread in here somewhere about how people are copying Audi and that Audi are now copying BMW's rears..... so it all goes round...

I think that statement was totally uncalled for! Oh so they cant make cars because you say so! How are they ever going to make good cars if they don't start somewhere!

If this car does manage to pull off the traditional Chinese trick of copying a design and selling it cheaper it’s going to be hugely popular.

True the design is hardly original but it's a fine look and if this car costs significantly less than the Ford Focus (preferably less than the Ford Ka) I'd buy one, can anyone see a good reason not too? If this car delivers the value for money expected of Chinese cars why not buy one? If this car costs the same as its rivals I'd probably buy a rival (assuming the Roewe wasn't drastically better than those rivals).

Ahh well, it'll be another 20 years before they get good at this. Why? Because that seems to be the new incubation time for a complete turnaround! Hyundais didn't seem to be all that until about 2005! Japan showed up in the 60's, released the Camry, Maxima, Accord in the late 70's and 80's ! It'll just take time before the Chinese really get into the market.

Until then, they'll just be also rans, and for people who should just go buy a used Accord!

There.

So then you recognise that they produce sub-par cars?
I think we've all seen crash tests for some Chinese SUV's. I'm sure that this will fare better than the one I'm thinking of, but of course I'm biased. Alot of the stuff I see with "Made in China" stamped on it is cheap crap.
And the last time I saw a Rover, I was playing The Getaway. Rovers haven't been imported into Canada for quite a while....

Now, I think there is some sort of distinction to be made. The XK and DB9 were designed at roughly the same time, if I recall correctly. I'm not sure which came out first, but the DB9 in my eyes comes with a distinct influence from the Vanquish. And the XK with the previous XK. Both lines of car have been similarly styled for a long time.
The Roewe (And what appears to be all other Chinese marques) have been blatantly ripping off already-established designs. The RL has been around for... Years. I'm not sure how many to be exact.

Actually theres a thread in here somewhere about how people are copying Audi and that Audi are now copying BMW's rears..... so it all goes round...

Yup. People are indeed copying Audi. I don't know why, though. Copying a grille, I will say, does differ from copying a whole car. Though I don't see the Audi-BMW thing. Nobody else (except Lexus) would want to copy the Bangle-Butt.

I think that statement was totally uncalled for! Oh so they cant make cars because you say so! How are they ever going to make good cars if they don't start somewhere!

I didn't say they couldn't make cars. I said they don't deserve to be making cars. Which was pre-qualified by me saying "Until they can come up with decent, original designs". At the very least, something original. More power to them if they want to make it ugly. I think that if Hyundai can manage something kinda-original for their base model cars, then a company that bought Rover could come up with something better than that. You know, make it have some cues from previous Rovers. Or something. Don't just take an Acura RL and cut a hole in the front for an Audi grille.

Edit - Heh. That was actually kinda fun. Now I know why M5Power does it so often...

To back that argument up, they were also designed by the same man, working for the same company.

Its a little bit different when the two cars are owned by the same parent company, and both designed by Ian Callum.

Edit: Tree'd by seven hours...Didn't read that post.
