Russian plane crash carrying major league hockey team. 43 dead

I saw this on nhl.com earlier, it's a sad day for Hockey and an even sadder day for all the friends and family of those involved.:(

:((makes me really sad..damnit ****ers russian pilots who flew a plane which was
not legally in use!! rip pavol demitra</3 one of my fauvorite players ever since i started hockey:((

Wow..... Unbelievable, rough summer for hockey players this year. Really feel fire the families and players who knew them.

Damn, hockey players have been dropping like flies this summer. RIP guys and my prayers go out to their families.

Ruslan Salei, Brad McCrimmon, Pavol Demitra, just awful :(

I read somewhere that there were 4 players from the farm team there, and a few of the players who died were from the Russian world junior team that beat Canada for gold last winter.

Not the best year for those up in the sky..

R.I.P to all, and my heart goes out to the families of these people.

:(

RIP to all in that plane crash. Really sad story. --- Randy

This is really an awful day in sport. :(

...flew a plane which was not legally in use!!

Apparently, it had another month of air-worthiness according to the BBC article. That's actually not that old an aircraft; many commercial jet aircraft in the United States (of which the FAA has some of the world's toughest restrictions and safety standards) are easily 20+ years old. If the reports are to true, then hitting a radio tower is going turn tragic for any aircraft, no matter what the age, constructor, or nation of registry.

Another depressing news again just like the loss of an "exemplary and splendid" aircraft pilot for an England's aviation team right after their performance in the air a few weeks back... Rest in peace to all of those embroiled in the accident. :(

It hits close to home for me, just mostly because some of those players are borderline household names here in Canada. Pavol Demitra specifically, he was the captain of the Slovakian national team, and won the Lady Byng trophy in the NHL in 2000 (most sportsmanlike). Ruslan Salei, another former NHLer. Swedish goalie Stefan Liv was an olympic champion in 2006, Karel Rachunek, Karlis Skrastins... just really eerie for me to be reading all of these household names in this crash. Just an awful crash.

I read yesterday that the mother of one of the players (Sergei Ostapchuk) died of a heart attack out of shock after hearing about the crash...just a terrible accident all around.

Another thing, this must be a bit scary for some of the players who signed in the KHL this summer. Brent Sopel comes to mind, he's played in North America his whole life, I wonder if he's a little apprehensive now...

The aerial crash appeared to have had an enormous impact on the broadcasters of "RussiaToday" too when I watched the news about that ominous accident killing most of the players belonging to the team after I read the obituary on BBC... Other contestants due to have matches with them were also in grief to be informed of the guys suddenly and unexpectedly being brought to an end.

Great condolence to all of the brilliant players perished at the occasion. Again.

I heard the news from Twitter. My local Ice Hockey team players where all firing up their sympathy. What a horrible accident. Scaring thing about it for me was I was watching a documentary about the Munich Air Disaster the night before.

Very similar.....

RIP to all those involved. Big loss to the KHL league.
