I recieved Saints Row's demo yesterday with my latest OXM, and it has blown me away. The end.

When I first heard about Saints Row, I thought it would be great until later on, I thought it could turn out bad. I was wrong for now.

When you start up your demo, you'll be presented with your player creation. It's not super-in-depth, but it's pretty good. In the demo, you only get head, 1 hair, body, and race. Afterwords, you'll start in the middle of near a 3-way war. After this, you're picked up by The Saints. Now, you're free to roam (I did the missions until Snatch to start roaming). Note though that you never speak in the demo.

The 1st noticeable thing is the graphics. Jesus F. Christ, they're gorgeous. Totally blowing Rockstar away, and using full power of the X360. The animations are terrific. And explosions are awesome. And blood...well, the blood is good looking too. The water glimmers in the sun, the shadows are wonderfully done and match swaying trees, and the buildings look good. Everything looks good.

Sound will be the next. The city sounds are very good, and the voices are very good. Most of you will probably recognize Julius when you hear him. The people all have something to say, a lot of seems to be mean comments toward you. The gun shots are very good as well, even the clinking bullets when they fall. Unlike GTA, you can even hear the radio in certain cars. The subway sounds are really authentic (for a game) as well. The police sirens sound much nicer unlike GTA.

Guns for the most part are fun as hell. There isn't a lock on system, which you probably don't care for, but they are fun as hell. In the demo, you get 3 pistols. The 3rd is a bit hard to find. It's like an old west-style pistol. You also get pipe bombs, and if you're lucky, molotovs. The melee weapons aren't too bad. Bats, crowbar, and a knife are that;s available. The shotgun, easily, does the most damage, but you'll have to steal it from cops. There's also the hidden AK though I have yet to get it. You may also find an Uzi from gangs too.

Vehicles are much like GTA. Name's appear at the bottom, yadda-yadda-yadda. In GTA, certain vehicles of the same brand are some small different things. In Saints Row, they all have some different deals. The SUVs somtimes have spare tires, or camper boxes on the roof. Some have different rims. The vans are sometimes like day-care vans (not actual day-cares), or delivery vans and range in size.
Gangs' cars are pretty cool. Though you can't customize your vehicles, you can see the levels of customization. Gangs tend to use a certain era of cars (Ballas use imports, the latinos, lowriders). But they're almost all different. Ballas have Civic-like cars (many of these look different, great diversity), sedans and even convertibles. Cars also use turn signals (don't think you can).👍

These, as said, give us a huge variety in vehicles (though I'm sure there's more in the city; would like to see some big commercial vehicles).

Gang wars were a JOKE in GTA:SA. The game focused too much on ghetto gangs to big time gangs making it unrealistic. In the demo, it's nothing but "ghetto" gangs. So far, I've only encountered 3. The Saints (your's), the Ballas, and Lations (don't know their names yet). Your character even has the broken-leg gangsta walk. But it all sticks to "gangstas", and while gangstas look stupid sometimes, this isn't too bad in the demo. It's not all, "Aw, wtf *****! I killz yo ass b*tch!" No, they all have a good grasp on proper English. There is a lot of swearing though, and the ratings say partial nudity (haven't seen any).

Like GTA, robberies are common, and more realistic in the gun store and clothing store. In these 2, you can only rob them once as they open their safes in the back with money realistically falling out. Shoot 'em, and the sirens go off. Places like the Plastic Surgeon (changes your appearence), and the mechanic can be robbed over and over.

Food, unlike GTA, gives health. There's no demand to eat. You can hold 4 food items for health by pressing B. Also in B, is your weapons selection. Like GTA, you can't hold the bat and the knife though.

Clothing is much like GTA. Certain clothes give more respect. There's a good variety as well in the demo. BTW, no loading screens. All stores have a back entrance and a front, and pressing Y, you'll either kick the door open or push it open.

Drugs and Beer are in the demo. They don't do anything but generate health...well, the drugs give you that "high" effect, and it's really funny. Plus, you can beat the hell out of people faster. Which leads to the next deal. Fighting. Your triggers are your punchs, LB to kick. Fighting is pretty well done. Punches are different from a haymaker to an uppercut, to even a b*tchslap. Kicking's a bit the same.

City life is good. Everyone seems to have their own lifes, and you'll see broken TVs to couches, to even refriderators in the demo on the streets. The demo only stays in the day, though a loading screen shows nighttime. And of course, you're limited to one area. The map isn't SA standards, but it's bigger than the cities in SA individually.
Damage to the enviroment is excellent. You can kick tires, break fences, and cars take a lot of damage before blowing (warnings come GTA-style through fire on the hood). The game has rag-doll physics making for some intense positions when you hit someone (though they tend to get up more often than usual after a hard hit).

In GTA, you'll remember cops didn't do much to civilians. If a gang member or a civilian commits a crime, the cops are there. They hide very well behind their doors, and realistically, are unharmed.

Activities in the demo only include Snatching which is snatching hos for a pimp who says he'll let you in on the cut. There's only 2 levels, and the pimps seem to belong to Ballas in blue. The pimp's words are funny though you'll have to kill him to get the hos.

There isn't much more to say. I've put 12 hours into the demo alone though there are less than 5 actual missions. Your section isn't too bad and gives you an idea of the basic game. Very good graphics, terrific sound, great diversity in vehicles, and the options.

I give the demo a 9.7/10.
My wishes only include seeing cars park, more cars in 1 area, and cars that don't disappear 5 feet from you into nowhere.

My most favorite feature.
Drive a car to the gas station, but 3 bullet holes into the tanks, and BOOM! Fire everywhere with a flying car in the air. When it comes down, it remains on fire. Flaming doors, and tires, and gas parts are funny as hell.

If you got anything to add, feel free. I find this OXM issue is worth picking up for the demo alone (though there's a TDU preview. :D).

If you have any questions, I'll be glad to answer them too.

Nice read mate,

I picked up the mag after reading this post. You're right, game's pretty fun. I'm sure to pick it up now, game offers a lot of potential.

I just finished a 1 hour streak at the game, trying to pickup as many guns as possible... so far i got: Nav4 handgun(police), Auto9 (gangsta), Shotgun (police), 2 types of SMGs (gansta), Knife, Police club, Baseball bat and PIPE BOMBS!!! YEAHH!!

I changed my clothing quite a good number of times, the possibilities are endless and its really fun.

Too bad the plastic surgeon place wasn't available (can't talk to the dude for purchase).

The game'S graphics are awesome, although there are some drops in FPS here and there. Game looks sharp and seems as big as GTA was. Car Explosions are TERRIFIC (similar to GRAW) and send cars and people flying WAY high!

Also, i don't know if anyone else noticed, but the cars behave 'realistically'... sort of... There's a small hatch (basically a Honda Civic TypeR) that understears constantly (FWD) while there's a sunbird equivalent that overstears like crazy (RWP).

I agree with McLaren's opinion, a good 9/10 so far.

I never actually wanted to change my guy's look, but I thought it was possible given the "platform" was there.

I agree on the realism too. Lots of the cars are FR and FF, and the FF's do donuts pretty realistically. I also like if you tap the brakes, you slow down pretty quick, but pressing the brake button causes the brakes to lock up.

I did get out of the demo area using the technique on YouTube, but it only works going to south. The highway towards the city cuts off and the cars go through the roads.
