In need of a memory card for the old ps2...is there any way a USB stick would save the data? I tried my external hard drive to no avail...any suggestions?

You can back up a gamesave onto a USB stick, but a) you need third party software such as Gameshark or Action Replay Max (ARMAX) and b) not all USB sticks will work; the newer it is the less likely it is to work.
It's pretty easy to find PS2 memory cards in any case; do a quick google.
